8/ 🔍 Upskilling and reskilling through apprenticeships are critical to ensuring equitable access to AI-related jobs. Policymakers must continue supporting these pathways to expand opportunities and diversify the tech workforce.

7/ 💡 Small- and medium-sized firms are increasingly using apprenticeships to recruit AI talent, but large sponsors still account for most programs. Broadening access requires more support for smaller organizations to offer these opportunities.

6/ 📣 Diversity matters: AI apprenticeships are outperforming other tech fields in recruiting Black apprentices. In 2022, the number of Black apprentices nearly equaled that of White apprentices. However, gaps persist for women and Hispanic workers.

5/ 🌍 These apprenticeships aren’t just clustered in tech hubs. Programs are available in nearly every state, but Missouri, Texas, and California lead the way. Interestingly, 5 of the top 10 states aren’t among the U.S.’s most populous.

4/ ✅ Completion rates for AI-related apprenticeships are impressive: 68% of apprentices finish their programs—25% higher than the national average. These programs are helping workers gain in-demand skills and solidify a career path in tech.

3/ 📈 Key finding: AI-related apprenticeships surged by 191% from 2020 to 2022. From just a few programs in 2013, nearly 19,000 new apprentices have been registered—highlighting a promising growth trajectory for nontraditional AI training pathways.

2/ 📊 Using data from the Department of Labor’s RAPIDS database (2013–2023), we analyzed trends in AI-related apprenticeships: completions, demographics, locations, and program sponsors. Our dataset reveals how these programs are evolving to meet the needs of the AI workforce.
