I’ve been celebrating the incoming New Year with my Chinese wife today Matt. I’m 60 this year which makes my Chinese Zodiac sign the Horse. So this is my year.. I’ve been wearing Red all day, as is the custom, and eating dumplings. Fabulous!

That’s very sad and worrying news from Matt. I live in Bournemouth, but often visit Southampton in Hampshire. My friend Professor Clive Gamble works at Southampton University, Archaeology department. So I’m now wondering how far archaeological cutbacks will go. Not good news at all.

Happy IDD to all my friends and colleagues in the scientific world. Today we venerate the man who promoted Evolution by means of Natural Selection. A “then” theory co-attributed with Alfred Russell Wallace. Still the best explanation for the evolution of life we have in my humble opinion.

Excellent day rewatching the 1991 one day cricket series between Australia and India. Featured my favourite Indian cricketer Kapil Dev and my all time favourite cricketer Dean Jones (who I saw at the MCG in 1989 with my cousin Steve. Dean made 102 not out for Victoria against New South Wales).

As a palaeoanthropologist, I think the new nomenclature of Homo terrestrial reptilia (Land reptilian Man- for Silurians) and Homo Aqua reptilia (Marine reptilian Man - for Sea Devils) is more appropriate and should hopefully silence some of social media’s current debate on the subject.

Following part one & two of the War between the Land and the Sea,
I’ve read various posts on Facebook/Bluesky/X, today, which are critical of the use Homo Aqua (Sea Devils) and Homo reptilia (Silurians), stating basically these names are invalid taxonomically.

My two research projects in China over 12 years were located at Shangchen and the Nihewan Basin. I did however visit the Peking Man site/museum in 2011 with my wife and archaeology friend. Amazing place.

The Covid Fraud Commissioner Tom Hayhoe, mentioned by Rachel Reeves in today’s budget. I campaigned for Tom in 1987, when he was the SDP candidate for High Wycombe. Tom always had time to chat, although incredibly busy campaigning. A really nice bloke. Glad he’s gone places..
