Death kills the main characters of each film in a matter of days. I don't think that it would have taken years to kill the survivors of the tower.

I didn't think that it worked at all. The death is changed so it really is an accident. I didn't sense that the writer-director thought that the protagonists were bad people! One of them washes up on the shore alive at the end as though we cared for them like they were Dewey in 'Scream'.
