Grassroots report paints clearer picture of Canada's arms trade with Israel Researchers used Israeli customs data and commercial shipping records to identify 391 direct Canadian military shipments to Israel since October 2023, many of which were sent on passenger flights.

UPDATED with belated comment from GAC, whose rationale for exporting mortar cartridges sounds eerily similar to what General Dynamics told the CBC.

To stop Gaza genocide, Canada must escalate pressure on Israel - CCPA Canadian companies, with the approval of the Canadian government, are supplying military equipment for Israelโ€™s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Canada is sending hundreds of thousands bullets to Israel as it guns down children waiting in line for food. Not only should Canada cancel arms contracts, it should also cancel trade deals, punish Canadian investors in Israel, and expel Israeli diplomats.

I wrote about it for @policyalternatives.ca

Data shows 90% of trespassing tickets on Edmonton transit go to those with no fixed address | CBC News Transit peace officers in Edmonton gave out 5,721 tickets for trespassing in 2024ย โ€” a move that housing and legal advocates say is disproportionatelyย โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹harming those who are homeless.ย Data obtain...

I remember a cop trying to justify this by saying they know unhoused people can't pay tickets, so "nothing ends up happening."
In reality, criminalizing poverty just like this is a key contributor to the excruciating death rate among unhoused people.

Hereโ€™s the full media release from the CTLA Policing Committee. We included some recommendations, including for a more specific, targeted transit ban policy.

Oh, and the numbers of trespass tickets go up during the winter months, clearly showing that more people are sheltering in transit, and being banned and ticketed while doing so, during the coldest months.

30.07.2025 20:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The tickets that peace officers are giving to people with no fixed address are also mostly the kind that could result in arrest warrants, so this is leading to deprivations of liberty for unhoused people.

30.07.2025 20:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There is no appeal process for transit bans, and if people trespass, the data show people may get both a trespass ticket and another ban.

Transit peace officers give trespass tickets after they first ban someone for a period of time that could be anywhere from one day to two years, and the banned person enters transit property or vehicle. They ban people for a variety of reasons. Some legitimate, some questionable.

30.07.2025 20:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Edmonton transit peace officers gave over three million dollars worth of trespass tickets to people with no fixed address in 2024. Thatโ€™s 90% of all the trespass tickets they gave, and 51% of all tickets of any kind they gave to anyone.

Hilborn, deputy chief, Community Standards Peace Officers, said the figure does not reflect the amount collected & doesn't have info on how many with no fixed address have paid.
Then, obviously, the City should get the information.

Coal company wins $142.8-million from Alberta government over policy flip-flop Atrum Coal agreed to drop its lawsuit and surrender coal leases back to the government in exchange for cash

In 2020, the UCP suddenly scrapped land rules that had been in place since 1976, inviting a flurry of new investment into coal expansion. Then mass public pressure and a court challenge drove them to reverse thatโ€”which left the province vulnerable to lawsuits from those investors, like this one:

Seeing the level of need in our inner city, she walked into Boyle Street Community Services and offered to volunteer.
