One of my recent research projects was on Felton and Helen Dortch Longstreet in the 1912 election. It was a fascinating paper, and I look forward to when it is published. This post barely scratches the surface of Felton's complex life.

I am especially interested in how Welles chose to critique Nazi Germany (and fascism in general) with a production with echoes of Weimar German Expressionism. This image (pulled from online) is from Lynd Ward's God's Man, which was also heavily inspired by Weimar Germany.

The Mercury Theatre’s 1937 adaptation of Julius Caesar. If looks both visually stunning and powerful in the photographs I have seen.

The Railroad Raiders of '62 (Short 1915) | Short, Thriller 10m

@moviessilently.bsky.social Off topic, but there is an earlier film of the same story directed by Sidney Olcutt (www.imdb.com/title/tt1329...). Do you know of any good sources about its history? The information online is limited.

Also, you probably already know the connection, but Cobb County is home to the Great Locomotive Chase from Keaton’s The General. I live in the town where the engine was stolen in real life.

It does mention that the local newspaper editor, R. M. Goodman, was previously editor of the Augusta Constitutionalist. He was active from the 1840s until after the Civil War.

I’m not sure then… I checked the county history (published in the 1930s), and while Augusta is mentioned often in the index, none are about a feud. (The book is 500 pages, and the author called it the β€œA Short history of Cobb County”!)

I should also add that Marietta and Augusta would have had drastically different sizes and regional importance, with Augusta being a major cotton market and Marietta being a smallish railroad / resort town.

I live just north of Marietta, and haven’t heard of anything. Most of the (post-war) 19th century beef I am aware of is between Augusta and Atlanta (Patrick Walsh vs. Henry Grady) and Atlanta vs the rest of the state.

Is there any other context?

The image is a piece of fan art titled "Klimt Eastwood," created by Carl TΓ©treault in 2016.

It depicts actor and director Clint Eastwood in a style inspired by the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, specifically referencing Klimt's "The Kiss".

Several years ago, SAHF received another donation of Good’s papers. Inside that collection was an 1832 deed from the North Georgia land lottery, with the original seal still attached. If I am not mistaken, these two land records are the oldest documents in the SAHF collection. (3/3)

Because the courthouse was burned in 1864, very few deeds survive from before the Civil War. I have not quite determined what property this document is referring to. Interestingly, it was printed on the press of the Constitutional Union, a now mostly lost 1850s Marietta newspaper. (2/3)

Recently, the Save Acworth History Foundation (where I work as the archivist) were given personal papers and genealogical information from Kate Logan Good, a longtime Acworth resident and school teacher. Among these papers was an 1856 deed for land in Cobb County. (1/3)

After finding this postcard, I have been researching more of the history of Lanier University this week. It is a fascinating - and largely overlooked - part of 1920s Georgia history. I’m hoping to do a project about it in the near future.

Almost as soon as I posted this, I realized it should read β€œWhere are the Pickles of Yesterday?”

The article is about how the youth of Atlanta were forsaking pickles and olives as snacks - "The new style is to eat ice cream out of a cornucopia design. It is even more fashionable than 'hot dogs.'" (2/2)

I write serious historyβ€”via biographyβ€”for a non-academic audience. So I'd like to say something about Ken Burns's remark, something that also explains why AI can't write history.

Pardon me for citing the example of one of my books, "Custer's Trials," on one of history's best-known figures.

A nice addition to this mini collection: In 1829, the masthead featured an angelic printing press.

A Ladybird easy-reading book but it's all spelled very weird, eg the easy of "easy-reeding" is two strange E letters, a backwards Z, then a y.

Incredible article about a bunch of children - now in their 50s and 60s - who were taught to read using a doomed alternate alphabet invented by a Tory MP www.theguardian.com/education/20...

It strikes me as a very unique way of approaching silent film, or the past in general. I wonder how many people were first introduced to the medium via Freddie Mercury, Bonnie Tyler, or Pat Benatar.

I finally saw Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis restoration with the '80s soundtrack today. While I didn't love it, I also didn't hate it. I did not always think the soundtrack's tone matched the movie, and the use of both subtitles and intertitles was odd. That being said, it was a very engaging watch.

At one point, when Howell Cobb and his brother T. R. R. Cobb were household names in Georgia, there was a misconception that Cobb County was named after one of these siblings. The name actually comes from their cousin, Thomas W. Cobb.
