My paper "Do institutions matter? Taxation and State Formation in Pakistan" has been published by Canadian Journal of Development Studies.

Using state archives from Pakistan from its early years, I show that the state has been unable to arrive at political settlement with the society that would give it the necessary consents from its citizens for taxing them effectively.

Literature identifies strong centralised state bureaucracies as an important factor for strong fiscal capacity. This paper argues that a state's fiscal capacity can be weak despite having a strong centralised state structure.

I am reading General Theory by Keynes again after like 15 years. And uffff....it's such a poorly written book. Felt the same when I first read it. You can learn more about Keynes's work from (post) Keynesians than from the man himself!
