Integrated transport, joined-up journeys, multi-modal, whatever you say: the transport select committee's started a new inquiry, so I've taken the opportunity to set out how walking, wheeling and cycling are the glue that holds together other modes.

Just been to a conference fringe which was an hour and a half, not the usual hour, and it was honestly so much more worthwhile because of the space for discussion. Fewer fringes, more discussion!
30.09.2025 12:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Very exciting to be a late addition to this interesting panel tomorrow! We can build the 1.5 million homes we need and create places where people want to be. I'll explain how walking, wheeling and cycling can play their part.
28.09.2025 12:44 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've loved working closer with our media and comms team in the last few months. I really feel like my work to change public policy is connected to our comms strategy. So, if you'd like to work with them (and me) too, give this a shot.

Talking about inspirational work done by wonderful people? β
Using the media to make the case for wider change?β
Here's one you might wanna look at.

The Embankment cycleway (CS3) in London was purposefully built to be wider than was usual in order to future proof it.
Some said it would hardly be used.
Now thereβs a decent case for widening it further.
Induced demand is real.
I don't know of any older unanswered consultations, do you?
01.09.2025 08:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The outcome's the important bit - that there are fewer cars parked on the pavement, with everyone knowing where it was safe and necessary, whether they're driving, walking or wheeling.
01.09.2025 08:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0For what it's worth, I think that the question in this article of a "nationwide ban" or giving councils more powers is a red herring. Any "ban" would be left up to councils to decide where to enforce and where to exempt. That's absolutely right, they know their streets best.
01.09.2025 08:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Continued coverage shouldn't be needed, though. Powers for councils are a simple, cheap, quick fix which has worked in London and Scotland. They need finally to be rolled out in the English Devolution Bill.
01.09.2025 08:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As of yesterday, it's five years since the consultation into pavement parking opened in England, but it still hasn't been responded to. It's great to see lots of coverage - including my first appearance on the radio this morning! π§΅

It's five years today since the pavement parking consultation launched, but it's still parked. In that time, we've all been kept waiting for this simple fix. It's great to see MPs pushing it back up the agenda.

29.08.2025 09:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Giving councils powers to tackle pavement parking is sometimes seen as something which will "never happen". But, it did. In Scotland. We're putting on this webinar to look into the positives and learnings from the Scottish approach. π
29.08.2025 09:41 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I'm rewatching Capaldi right now, I don't really remember it so I don't think it's just nostalgia, but it's reminding me it was sooooooo much better
17.08.2025 22:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ah yes, that was a "y'all" you! (Congrats, by the way). Brilliant.
13.08.2025 13:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The multi-modal journeys stuff is particularly interesting - hope you're submitting to the new transport select committee inquiry!
13.08.2025 12:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Really excited to see this continued movement (!) in Greater Manchester. The transformation of the city is an opportunity to check these assumptions - does the bus boost walking and wheeling? - and it's looking so good so far. I was writing something yesterday using the TfGM figures.
13.08.2025 11:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Forgot to add, here's Transport to Thrive, if you're interested! www.sustrans.org.uk/our-blog/pro...
13.08.2025 10:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I wonder how we get over the gap between people's opinions of the cap (overwhelmingly positive) and the direct effects, which were relatively limited. Positive feelings aren't useless, they're the prerequisite to people considering changing their transport habits.
13.08.2025 10:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 02οΈβ£ The discussion of fares in the report is fascinating - basically, that a fare cap is not the same as having a coherent plan for fares. I think this is right.
13.08.2025 10:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 01οΈβ£ It's lovely to see the focus on young people's journeys: it really balanced out the assocations of buses with older people. The report very early on quotes our Transport to Thrive research about this, and it feels like the case made there has been built on here. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
13.08.2025 10:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The transport select committee have just released a report into buses. Almost every bus journey starts with a walk or wheel, so improving bus journeys is vital to Sustrans' mission, and vice versa. Some thoughts:
publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5901/cm...
20mph isn't right everywhere. But London's shown that it shouldn't be the last resort either, confined to roads outside schools or hospitals. In built-up areas, where people are walking and wheeling, councils should give people what they want: safe streets.
12.08.2025 16:59 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1Almost got run over by Kyle Soller on a Lime and my partner said that I was honoured!
