The picture shows a large, old-fashioned sailing ship moored at a quiet dock under a moody sky in Oslo, Norway. After the description, l have a nightmarish tale… The ship’s tall wooden masts rise high, laced with an intricate web of ropes and rigging. Its sails are furled tight, as if resting after a long voyage. The dock is wet and empty, save for a lone bicycle leaning against the railing. Overhead, dark storm clouds gather, but a faint light breaks through near the horizon. There is a soft, eerie glow of orange and pink where the sun struggles against the gloom. The distant shoreline and rows of smaller ships fade into the mist. The whole scene feels heavy with silence and secrets. Our picture is in colour and has a pure white border frame. And now, our nightmarish tale…. The Return of the Havfruen They said the Havfruen was lost to the North Sea, swallowed whole in a sudden squall one black November night. Her captain, Lars Eikland, and his twelve-man crew vanished without a word, leaving only silence and the distant cries of gulls. Months passed. Winter melted into spring. Then one dawn, as fog rolled over the fjord, the Havfruen returned. She drifted into the harbour, sails furled, ropes hanging limp, her deck slick with sea salt and ice. No voices called from her bow, no footsteps sounded on her planks. The lanterns still burned, faintly flickering…though no one had lit them. When the harbormaster boarded her, he found plates set on the mess table, the captain’s log open mid-sentence, and wet footprints leading from the sea to the helm… and nowhere else. The last line written read: “She calls to us from below….the Lady of the Deep.” To this day, on storm-dark nights, the Havfruen is seen gliding through the mist off the Norwegian coast, her sails full though no wind stirs, her crew unseen, her lanterns burning cold. Some say she searches still… for the one who called her name beneath the waves. Sleep well…..

Memorable for the near perfect formation of the young Great Tits and also because I spent the week looking at the photo on the contents page of the Radio Times cursing the BBC for not using one of my photos. Before putting the Radio Times out for recycling, I checked it against my files only to discover that it was my photo. In my defence it had been flipped left to right and cropped to a circle.
