FWIW, I first used email in 1980 at Sperry Univac. It was part of the "office automation system" we were developing that was going to replace typewriters. I worked more on the word processing and printing side.

I teach the same thing to my students about ethical dilemmas.

There might not be an ideal solution, but the fact that you recognize the dilemma, i.e., that someone will suffer whichever way you decide, makes you an ethical person. Try to find the least hurt and/or mitigate the damage.
