In the early 80s I played in a rehearsal of Shostakovich 5, a youth orchestra augmented by adults. The principal horn, a seasoned pro, smoked throughout, placing the cigarette between the second and third valve slides when he had to play.
08.02.2026 13:01 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I think Iโve seen that - made when the LSO was very much a male preserve.
07.02.2026 15:40 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Have just found mine. Itโs the no frills manual model so I need to dig out the light meter. It works well though.
05.02.2026 18:19 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yes - when I use a Trip 35 I always use the feet and metre readings rather than the zone symbols.

31.01.2026 20:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Late music from a 20th century giant, a neglected symphony and an epic work for solo guitar: dirge canons, dances and a donkey feature in this week's classical CD round up chosen by @grahamrickson.bsky.social @bernardhughes.bsky.social www.theartsdesk.com/classical-mu...
31.01.2026 07:47 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This week's Classical CD selection contains both a DONKEY and some STRAVINSKY. It's all good. Read more here: theartsdesk.com/classical-mu... @pentatonemusic.bsky.social @bernardhughes.bsky.social #classicalmusic #stravinsky #moeran #donkeys #moeran #strauss
31.01.2026 06:54 โ ๐ 11 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This came out late last year, so not a brand new release. Wonderful though!
30.01.2026 19:56 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The parallels with Walton 1 are striking: both works are big, four-movement symphonies in minor keys which end with Sibelius 5-style hammer blows and each one took years to complete.
29.01.2026 07:16 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The sound is amazingly clear - better than a typical mono LP from the same period. You can hear what a good orchestra the BBCSO was in those days.
29.01.2026 06:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Iโve been listening to this, and itโs really cheered me up. Such a good piece!
28.01.2026 20:39 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Lots of fun - I'd never noticed how well Stravinsky uses the piano in that version, and how seamlessly the individual movements are linked. Genius. I love the 1945 suite's ending, the brass chords bright and clipped. We played superbly (not that I'm biased). @sinfoniaofleeds.bsky.social
27.01.2026 20:01 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Was it recorded for the LPO's label? I've never heard the Barshai version and you've piqued my curiosity.
27.01.2026 16:10 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Itโs brilliant - every episode hits the mark. Iโd forgotten about the shoeshine boy, and the guest stars listed in the the opening credits.

24.01.2026 18:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Iโm lucky enough to be performing this tomorrow. The 1945 version sounds extraordinary when youโre sat in the middle of it, the colours brighter and the quirky details easier to hear. Genius. #stravinsky #firebird

22.01.2026 16:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thereโs a recent English-language remake of Ikiru with Bill Nighy. Itโs ok, but the original is best.
21.01.2026 21:14 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Watch some vintage Japanese films! Ikiru or Tokyo Story are brilliant entry points. Both made me blub.
