In the early 80s I played in a rehearsal of Shostakovich 5, a youth orchestra augmented by adults. The principal horn, a seasoned pro, smoked throughout, placing the cigarette between the second and third valve slides when he had to play.

I think Iโ€™ve seen that - made when the LSO was very much a male preserve.

Have just found mine. Itโ€™s the no frills manual model so I need to dig out the light meter. It works well though.

Yes - when I use a Trip 35 I always use the feet and metre readings rather than the zone symbols.

Iโ€™ve got an Agfa Paramat! Bought for peanuts on eBay. Fiddlier than my usual Olympus EE3 but works well.

Superb! Thank you. I live in Leeds but Hull is much more photogenic. Your photos are ace.

Late music from a 20th century giant, a neglected symphony and an epic work for solo guitar: dirge canons, dances and a donkey feature in this week's classical CD round up chosen by @grahamrickson.bsky.social @bernardhughes.bsky.social www.theartsdesk.com/classical-mu...

This came out late last year, so not a brand new release. Wonderful though!

The parallels with Walton 1 are striking: both works are big, four-movement symphonies in minor keys which end with Sibelius 5-style hammer blows and each one took years to complete.

The sound is amazingly clear - better than a typical mono LP from the same period. You can hear what a good orchestra the BBCSO was in those days.

Iโ€™ve been listening to this, and itโ€™s really cheered me up. Such a good piece!

Lots of fun - I'd never noticed how well Stravinsky uses the piano in that version, and how seamlessly the individual movements are linked. Genius. I love the 1945 suite's ending, the brass chords bright and clipped. We played superbly (not that I'm biased). @sinfoniaofleeds.bsky.social

Was it recorded for the LPO's label? I've never heard the Barshai version and you've piqued my curiosity.

Itโ€™s brilliant - every episode hits the mark. Iโ€™d forgotten about the shoeshine boy, and the guest stars listed in the the opening credits.

Iโ€™m lucky enough to be performing this tomorrow. The 1945 version sounds extraordinary when youโ€™re sat in the middle of it, the colours brighter and the quirky details easier to hear. Genius. #stravinsky #firebird

Blu-ray: Ikiru Akira Kurosawaโ€™s Ikiru (To Live) begins with an X-ray photo of the central characterโ€™s cancer-ridden stomach, a man described by the narrator (an uncredited Kurosawa) as someone โ€œdrifting through life...

Screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro, so it's well done if a bit sentimental. The Kurosawa one made me cry more!

Thereโ€™s a recent English-language remake of Ikiru with Bill Nighy. Itโ€™s ok, but the original is best.

Watch some vintage Japanese films! Ikiru or Tokyo Story are brilliant entry points. Both made me blub.

Banjo ukes are so much LOUDER than standard wooden ukuleles. I took mine into a school today and some of the younger pupils covered their ears!

Looks good! Mine has the G string tuned an octave lower, which does make the sound slightly less irritating.
