War on the Past

Love is just a clue.

If we win the world
can come back
to the world, speechless

aligned, cell within cell

You must put the objects
down on the table
and walk casually from the room
you cannot re-enter

until we get it right.

Another early poem by Cole Swensen. Can't get this one out of my head.

One of my disappointments when I ran VerseFest was not being able to draw Marie Howe to the festival. Mostly it was a matter of money, and sometimes of schedule. She was someone I certainly wanted to hear

I used to have a friend who celebrated Guy Fawkes Day every year on his farm. It always included bonfires and fireworks, but every now and then we burnt an old car.

I usually make pesto, but don't get very much - I only have a few dozen garlic plants in my garden. Thought I'd try something different this year. There are a variety of recipes online but they all involve scapes and some form (usually coarse) of salt.

Again, just a general call for essays by Canadian poets. They can be personal, poetic, something in-between, from established older writers or MFA students, whatever the case may be. Send queries to query@the-wood-lot.ca and I am sure we can work something out.
