11.02.2025 22:08 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0If you are a home educating family, are you *also* explicitly teaching your children the importance of supporting public education? If not, itโs time to start.

30.01.2025 12:54 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Can't blame you if you shut off the RFK hearing yesterday. His storm of lies was exhausting.
I watched it and the one throughline shows why Republicans love him so: He wants to take your health care away. Not just vaccines โ all of it.
An analysis.

Whenever people push back on me saying children should be able to make decisions, or at the very least participate in decisions, about their daily lives, I remind them that not so long ago women couldnโt vote, do most jobs, and were told we werenโt capable of rational thought and decision-making.
28.01.2025 15:15 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Itโs a bit like if you were doing research on womenโs rights and most of the research was people speaking to men, surveying men, interviewing men. I know people will say itโs not the same - but itโs similar. There was a time when people didnโt think women could think or speak for themselves.
28.01.2025 14:51 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Iโve been working on a proposal for my research into the way children understand and enact their rights in education settings, and itโs shocking how little research there is that actually involves children - speaks to them, gets their opinions and thoughts. (Especially younger children)

20.01.2025 00:51 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0100%!!!
20.01.2025 00:49 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yes, absolutely!!
19.01.2025 03:17 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Ok let me try again: home education, if done from a childrenโs rights perspective, is a left-wing act.
19.01.2025 00:22 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I totally get this. I think unschooling has become such a broad umbrella term that perhaps it means almost nothing. But thatโs not what I mean when I use the term!
19.01.2025 00:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Also, home education in all its many versions can be left-wing. It is absolutely not only unschooling/SDE that is left-wing!
19.01.2025 00:01 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I hear you. I donโt see unschooling that way - I see it as my children being self-directed and working in partnership with me, in a relatively non-hierarchical manner. I definitely donโt expect them to stumble into learning! We work together. Perhaps โself-directed educationโ is a better descriptor.
19.01.2025 00:00 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Actually I donโt particularly want to challenge people, just put it out there as an idea/fact.
18.01.2025 23:30 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Unschooling from a childrenโs rights & liberatory perspective is a left-wing thing, I challenge you to disagree ๐ฌ
18.01.2025 23:29 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 4 ๐ 0This is awful, and also donโt you think homeschooling was used as a ruse? Clearly they werenโt actually home educating. Why did social services not follow up? Why did the school he was pulled out of raise no red flags? Personally i am for some regulation around homeschooling, and itโs also complex
18.01.2025 23:27 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thanks thatโs helpful. I still think school choice often comes at the cost of defunding public schools, in practice. If we could have both fully funded public schools and a variety of choice for our children - well that would be ideal!
18.01.2025 23:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yeah the high-jacking of homeschooling by the right is infuriating. But also - perhaps it was always more of a right-wing thing? I know that John Holt didnโt mean it to be.. but were religious homeschoolers already doing it before Holt?
18.01.2025 23:22 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Iโm not worried about that. Iโm more worried about public funding doing to private (often religious) schools. That seems like it could be a possibility and I believe itโs happening already in many districts.
18.01.2025 23:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0*that should say see through!!
18.01.2025 17:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0As a progressive home educator, I am anti-school choice. Yes, we exist: leftie homeschoolers who are through the conservative agenda to strip public schools of funding AND equally believe childrenโs rights should be at the centre of public education.
