99% of all American film of note were studio films until relatively recently. Outside of a couple, even John Cassavetes films were studio releases, so it pretty much makes it a top 15 American movie

One of the most beautiful women ever and a fine actress. She and Delon in The Leopard rank with Bergman and Grant in Notorious and Cheung and Leung in In the Mood for Love as the most gorgeous screen couples. RIP

Robert Redford did lots a great TV in the early 60’s. ‘Nothing in the Dark’ from the Twilight Zone(S-3 E-16) will be particularly poignant viewing today. His early performance in The Iceman Cometh can be seen on YouTube. I hope he gets the tributes he deserves

A Little Prayer is one of the best American movies of the years. Intelligent and moving. Sad but lovely.

At least it was a real movie with a POV, even if that view seemed out of date. Also it’s hurt if you compare to the original , which is a flat out masterpiece.

Stagecoach’s compassionate treatment of Claire Trevor’s sex worker is so progressive. John Ford was such a contradiction

His politics really sucked but so did Barbara Stanwyck, Ginger Rogers, Robert Taylor, Leo McCarey and many, many others who stardom didn’t last as long to be a giant Vietnam supporter.

Same author as The Manchurian Candidate, which may be the best political thriller ever(1962 version). Winter Kills is great fun

With the exception of Nolan, none of the old guard makes money on theatrical releases-Fincher, Scorsese, PTA, Soderbergh, Cronenberg haven’t had a money maker in years

When I was going up in the late 60’s, early 70’s it was common for talks show to have on William F. Buckley, Gore Vidal,Norman Mailer, Germaine Greer etc.. and it was great lively conversations even if you disagreed with them. Now we get clowns

It’s not leaving Criterion, but I found the new Guiraudie movie Misericordia, much superior to the two earlier films that are leaving. Recommended if you haven’t seen it. Tea and Sympathy is interesting more as history than art

Thanks, Appreciate it. I’m good with body horror but sensitive to jump scares. Will probably see it anyway
