In our latest study with Bahar Öz, we explored how individuals’ own sex roles and perceived driving skills relate to stereotypes about female and male drivers. Understanding these perceptions is key to addressing bias, promoting gender equity in mobility, and improving road safety for everyone.

🚗 Driving in Türkiye is still a largely male-dominated activity, and that is linked to how people think and behave on the roads. You’ll often see headlines referring to “women drivers” in the news, reflecting deep-rooted sex stereotypes.

In this paper, we have looked into the psychometric properties of the Measure for Angry Drivers in a Chinese sample and explored the associations among metacognition, anger rumination, driving‐related anger (trait driving anger and aggressive anger expression), and crash risk.

The Road Safety on Five Continents (RS5C) 2025 program is taking shape! Happening right here in Leeds, the conference will feature three days of poster and oral sessions, three keynotes, and six special sessions, bringing together global voices in road safety and transport research.

This year, two projects from the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds and our @hfs-its-leeds.bsky.social team were funded by the RST. It was great to present alongside the brilliant Yee Mun Lee and showcase the impactful work happening across West Yorkshire!

It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and meet new faces. A big thank you to Richard Cuerden and the TRL and the PACTS teams for hosting us and giving a tour of the facility, and to David Crundall for chairing the session and providing a platform to disseminate our work.

We looked at how risk perception and traffic locus of control are related to driving behaviour and speed preferences. Our findings show that it's not just the level of risk perception that matters - how we attribute crashes also plays a key role in this relationship.

• Technology affinity, perceived driving skills, and traffic climate perception are related to willingness to use.

Highlights
• A cross-country online survey was undertaken to investigate the willingness to use conditionally automated driving systems.
• The survey data from eight countries and 7896 participants were examined.

We found that users’ technology affinity, perceived driving skills, and traffic climate all play a key role in how willing they are to use ADS, and these relationships vary quite across countries 🌍

As 2024 comes to a close, we're reflecting on a fantastic year for the Human Factors and Safety Group and Virtuocity. Highlights include celebrating our 30th anniversary, saying goodbye to our second-gen driving simulator, and preparing for the launch of our third-gen driving simulator in 2025.
