Exactly, I would not have compared the things at all.
You add a sound card to the PC you *already have for work* and it becomes gaming-capable I guess.
Just like in 1996, sure, a 3D accelerator was almost as expensive as a Playstation but you had a PC anyway and the Voodoo made it rival the PS.

There were some cool looking ones, like the TMNT arcade game conversion, Pac-Mania, the Pinball games etc, and even many that played like ass but still looked cool.
I just don't get why people defend it so much when bad decisions (unfortunately) drove it to extinction.

I don't know about your specific town, but by 1992 most IBM compatible users had a Sound Blaster or compatible card, and they had to buy it sometime, so 1991, with the prices having shrunk, seems like the most likely point in time to do it.

Over the course of 1991, the regular street price dropped from around 180 to 130, possibly less on sale or used.
Money was worth a lot more, but SB *had* become the standard by then.
So much so that some GUS buyers disappointedly returned it because it was incompatible and they couldn't afford both.

Not in 1989 and in absolute numbers, but it was cheaper than the AdLib despite having more features, and by 1991 it was firmly established as the standard.

I have beloved core memories of playing Pac-Mania, Lemmings and Worms with my family, but as cool as these were, 90% of the Amiga's library looked great on screenshots with amazing color transitions and 5 parallax BGs but then was a sluggish janky platformer that felt like Skunny games on the PC.

But after these killer games ran on an old 386 but not on the new A1200, and the DX-2 66 and Gravis Ultrasound got released in the same year, the writing was on the wall even before DOOM came out.

You know, when Wolfenstein 3D and Alone in the Dark were released, running fine even on a 386.

I only had like 16 of them and they all died.
Back then those were imported from NL, not exactly cheap either because I had certain requirements for the seeds (must survive outdoors in the soft tomato greenhouse and must survive my newbie treatment).
