This newsletter does not focus on the ongoing sabre-rattling from across the Atlantic. Instead, we recap all the work we've been doing since the last issue and examples and opportunities for constructive collective engagement around the DSA.

The U.S. administration is going all in on its AI death cult. It's side-lining the environment and it's own citizens to scale the build out of an over-leveraged technology, while aggressively pushing their technology onto other countries trying to distribute collapse-risk.

Or as I put it in a talk last year:
This is not tech adoption, it is penetration - decidedly masculine, neither consensual nor reflected and it leaves us and our planet injured, if not violated.

f we don't resist, we're - most literally - fucked.

Meta rebuffs EU over AI rules The code of practice has faced months of fierce lobbying from the tech industry.

Meta just blew a hole in a EU plan to tame artificial intelligence models.

Today, the technology giant was the first Big Tech company to come out saying it will not sign the EU's code of practice for general-purpose AI.

Time To Deliver: Stakeholder Roles In The EUโ€™s Delegated Act On Data Access | TechPolicy.Press The Delegated Act on data access under the DSA provides much-needed clarity about both the access process and expectations towards the actors involved in it.

The discussions about big platforms are intense. The systemic risks are real.

Now the #DSA Delegated Act is finally here to ensure data access for researchers. Time to put this system to work.

Unpacking the EUโ€™s Digital Services Act Delegated Regulation on Data Access | TechPolicy.Press Over two years after the DSAโ€™s adoption, the delegated act on data access brings hope for researchers, though concerns persist, writes Jacob van de Kerkhof.

Last week, the EU adopted rules on data access under the DSA. The Delegated Act clarifies key procedures, but questions remain around what data will be available, how it will be protected, and how requests will be prioritized, writes Jacob van de Kerkhof.

โ€ข Resist the introduction of AI in our own software systems, from Microsoft to OpenAI to Apple. It is not in our interests to let our processes be corrupted and give away our data to be used to train models that are not only useless to us, but also harmful.

โ€ข Ban AI use in the classroom for student assignments, in the same way we ban essay mills and other forms of plagiarism. Students must be protected from de-skilling and allowed space and time to perform their assignments themselves.

โ€ข Cease normalising the AI hype and the lies which are prevalent in the technology industry's framing of these technologies. The technologies do not have the advertised capacities and their adoption puts students and academics at risk of violating ethical, legal, scholarly, and scientific standards of reliability, sustainability, and safety.

โ€ข Fortify our academic freedom as university staff to enforce these principles and standards in our classrooms and our research as well as on the computer systems we are obliged to use as part of our work. We as academics have the right to our own spaces.

โ€ข Sustain critical thinking on AI and promote critical engagement with technology on a firm academic footing. Scholarly discussion must be free from the conflicts of interest caused by industry funding, and reasoned resistance must always be an option.
