The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

The right sets the terms of our political discourse in so many ways, one of which is the idea that there isn't enough "debate" and "free speech" on campus.

We need to push back on this. The truth is (speaking for myself as a history prof), I don't really emphasize debate much in my classes/

Turns out the lesser evil was funding AIDS treatment and cancer research and clean energy projects and healthcare and food banks and school lunches.

Oh, and the lesser evil wasn’t sending masked men and troops into our cities, openly defying court orders, or firing doctors and scientists.

The message should not be that political violence is bad because it targeted a good guy who was “practicing politics the right way” (which Kirk definitely was not). Political violence is bad because it inherently corrodes the democratic polity, because it makes democracy impossible.

If we’re going to talk about political violence, let’s talk about where it started.

The real issue isn’t left vs right.

It’s not white vs black.

It’s not citizen vs immigrant.

It’s not gay vs straight.

The real issue is that a lot of powerful people have a vested interest — and a lot of money invested — in dividing us, and it’s working.

"Harvard can't use race as a factor in admissions, but ICE can use race as a factor in detentions" is a retrenchment essentially to a pre-Civil War understanding of the Constitution. It's vanishingly few steps removed from "Latinos have no rights which the white man is bound to respect."

To any Missourian, remember this is not about you, your voice, or what you care about, whether you’re in Kansas City, Kingsville, or Carthage.

If they’ll ignore you on this, they’ll ignore you when you need a hospital, jobs in your community, or schoolteachers in your town.

I am so looking forward to seeing their efforts backfire. Wouldn’t it be great to send Sam Graves and Mark Alford packing? There are progressive people in rural areas and small towns, our votes have been effectively cancelled for years. A change has got to come.
