A Moral or Militarized American Foreign Policy? | Common Dreams Instead of a values-based foreign policy, what has come out of the Trump White House this past year was a steady drumbeat of aggressive militaristic taunting.

Do morals matter for American foreign policy? Some of my thoughts on the current administration's first year in office, thanks to @commondreams.org.

When β€œRules” No Longer Apply – AHA Disdaining wartime rules of engagement, whether during the Cold War or today, are counterproductive to US military operations.

"Wartime rules of engagement are not some 'woke' constraint curbing military effectiveness as Secretary Hegseth would lead us to believe” writes Gregory A. Daddis in #AHAPerspectives, β€œthey areβ€”and long have beenβ€”the primary means of regulating the use of force in armed conflict." πŸ—ƒοΈ

Pentagon investigation of Sen. Mark Kelly revives Cold War persecution of Americans with supposedly disloyal views President Donald Trump and his supporters cast their domestic opponents as disloyal, traitorous or worse, rather than seeing dissent as part of democracy.

During the Cold War, crusades against domestic enemies focused on alleged communists. Today, any kind of dissent is a target. By @gregorydaddis.bsky.social for @us.theconversation.com theconversation.com/pentagon-inv...

Read an Excerpt. The Cold War Comes Home from Faith and Fear: America's Relationship with War Since 1945 by Gregory Daddis

America’s Cold War psyche was built on contradictions: faith in war as a solution and fear of war’s devastation.
@gregorydaddis.bsky.social examines this tension in an excerpt from his prescient book "Faith and Fear"

Because Hegseth's DoD seeks to erase the history of race, gender, etc. in the military, here are some books that speak to the realities on these topics:

Scrubbing these things from DoD webpages isn't going to make these issues go away. Rather, they will fester, to the detriment of all.
