I can’t help feeling warmly toward mastodon despite the weird fussiness that one gets there. People are so endearingly earnest. Bluesky feels frenetic by comparison and I have the feeling of speaking into the wind.

Most of the writers I’ve known have spent years broke with no health insurance, though not always *quite* broke enough to qualify for Medicaid. It’s fucking miserable

You got it. But a thing about this socialism dodge: I am a military veteran; 100% of my health care is provided by the US government. It is an almost pure example of socialized medicine. It works pretty well, as measured by health outcomes and patient satisfaction. We could do more of this

And what’s really insane is that *we know how to fix this*. Make billionaires pay taxes, Medicare for all 

Salons. Gardens. Tree forts. Camps. Villages. Magic circles.

Or maybe arbitrarily declare we are calling this sprawling thing The Expanse and individual entities can roll their own metaphors

Perhaps we keep observing it because intra-American bloodletting always seems like a lively possibility, not a relic of a half-forgotten past
