A weekend experiencing the Leeds Music Scene! Friday involved a visit to the lovely Yeadon Town Hall to see local band - The Dunwells. Then Sunday - the stadium - to see Mumford & Sons . Banjos were in evidence at both !
01.12.2025 09:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Loved appearing on Rangoli Radio this morning as a Rangoli Role Model (!) - think βdesert island discsβ. Watch this space for the online version appearing soon !
30.11.2025 11:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Our students and staff were inspired today hearing from @imdb.com founder Col Needham about his journey from studying computing at Leeds to leading the Worldβs authoratitive source on films and entertainment!
26.11.2025 16:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Congrats on getting the grant in ! I might add that your graph looks a bit linear ! Mine would look a bit more exponential ! π
17.11.2025 17:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am still waiting for a letter from Stockholm but in the mean time hereβs an old photo I unearthed of my better half 30 years ago holding the Nobel medal of CV Raman! The 1930 prize winner for physics for his work on light scattering and the Raman effect.
15.11.2025 09:43 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0This report by King's College is a great summary of TRAC and some of the challenges and progress that the TDG (on which I serve) has dealt with. Bottom line: I get that some of you don't like TRAC but there is much of value in the data we need to lean into!

Old photos of the University of Leeds campus I took when I was a summer intern in 1985 (I was 5 π)! Thereβs a tree in the middle of Clothworkers Court and the lab was in the Department of Colour Chemistry in what is now the @leedsunimedia.bsky.social .

This is my local in Leeds. A hidden away gem and now #1 pub in the country #goodfoodguide
01.11.2025 08:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thereβs beauty everyone you look! Would you expect to see such a floral display close to November literally on top of a motorway? Given you a big clue there - but where was this taken?
30.10.2025 20:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Good morning, Leeds

29.06.2025 21:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm delighted to share the news that I've been promoted to (full) Professor. Feeling very thankful for all those who have mentored and supported me over the years, the smart and enthusiastic team I get to work with on cool science, and the colleagues who make Glasgow a great place to work.
29.06.2025 21:09 β π 11 π 1 π¬ 2 π 1Why do some animals have slit-like pupils?. This nice vid does a great job of explaining some of the subtleties that myself and Martin Banks articulated in our 2016 Science Adv. paper. If you get bored of the optics there's some cure pics of cats!

Itβs a couple of days past the solstice but this is when the Sun sets the latest. The Sun rises the earliest before the solstice and the longest day is really a compromise between the two. Why ? I think because the Earthβs orbit around the Sun is elliptical so it doesnβt go at a constant speed
26.06.2025 06:59 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 02025 is the 200th Anniversary of Railways - which started in the NE of England with the Stockton Darlington Railway . Hereβs the train statue on a lovely day ! For pedants - it actually ran from Shildon to Stockton. Ps I am not a train spotter but feel Iβm on a slippery slope π
13.05.2025 12:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Pleased to say that I will no longer have to wear two pairs of spectacles at work simultaneously. Due to the arrival of new ones. Like Dominic Cummins I get my eyes tested in the North East. New specs have my name laser inscribed to aid in future losses but havenβt figured out how to read it yet !

05.04.2025 07:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Partial solar eclipse today in Richmond, Yorkshire. Sometimes a bit of cloud improves the viewing !
29.03.2025 11:38 β π 12 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Sunrise over Leeds! The time lapse video of the sunrise shows a sun pillar - the vertical light beam above the Sun moving across the sky as the Earth rotates.
26.03.2025 07:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Leeds Sunrise ! Itβs now moved to be more northerly than southerly since weβre past the Equinox !
26.03.2025 07:47 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Another day, another great sunrise. Although looking forward to the clocks changing so I donβt need to get up to quite so early. If you look carefully, you can see a Sun pillar which is a shaft of light vertically above the Sun!
20.03.2025 06:38 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Good morning Leeds!
18.03.2025 06:26 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The artwork under the Leeds inner ring road is endlessly changing! Love the latest ! π¨
05.03.2025 19:27 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Good morning Leeds ! The sunrises are getting earlier! Predicting the position of the Sun in the sky is not a new science. But thereβs always a part of me that thinks maybe we got it wrong and winter will last forever. Fortunate that theory has been falsified for at least another year.
04.03.2025 07:10 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A couple of the conjunctions of the planets. The first was taken from Richmond: you can see Orion, Mars, Jupiter and Sirius - the Dog Star. The second was taken from the Chevin overlooking Otley near Leeds. You can see Venus and Jupiter. The red light at the bottom is a real dog πΆ!
