It’s worth reminding ourselves: the goal isn’t simply to publish papers. The goal is to produce knowledge that yields predictable outcomes — science that stands the test of time"

The latest publication from our lab!
The famous "glomalin" from arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi is not a protein but a polysaccharide from AM fungi, so we renamed it "glomalose". Glomalin-related proteins are bacterial proteins stuck in this glomalose.

Functional divergence of plant SCAR/WAVE proteins is determined by intrinsically disordered regions
Intrinsically disordered regions in SCAR/WAVE proteins drive diverse functions in root hair and leaf trichome development.
Excited to share that our preprint has found a home in Science Advances. We show that intrinsically disordered regions determine the functional diversification of actin-regulatory SCAR proteins in Medicago. 🧵 1/3

Homepage - openRxiv
openRxiv is an independent non-profit, the new organizational home for bioRxiv and medRxiv, enabling researchers to instantly share groundbreaking findings with the global scientific community.
Big news: we are setting up a new non-profit organization to run bioRxiv and medRxiv. It's called openRxiv [no it's not a new preprint server; it's dedicated organization to oversee the servers] openrxiv.org 1/n

I want this: Genome-edited Chardonnay grapes resistant or tolerant to mildew & powdery mildew!
Did you know that grapes are grown on only ~5% of European agricultural land, but account for ~2/3 of all fungicide sprayed in Europe?

Although my position as research fellow does not formally include the right to strike, as we are classified under a "non-work" framework, I can no longer tolerate endless precarity or the cuts blocking our careers.
Research is work, and today, I am striking to defend it.

Right now, in Italy PhD and post-doc positions have:
-No real employment contract
-No health insurance
-Low salary,
and this act represents a further humiliation of public research.

Strike Day in Italy against government policies that threaten the future of Universities and Research.
The incoming law will result in:
-drastic reduction in government research fundings
-further fragmentation and instability in the post-doc path to faculty positions.

It seems things are changing in Italy about GMOs/NGTs (quite surprisingly to me) and the act of vandalism from last June resulted instead in a huge support to @vittoriab.bsky.social and her group.
Let's hope Italy keeps embracing NGTs for a more sustainable agriculture🤞
