Cast Out I rushed to be free of the mould, iron spilling too soon from its cradle. The crust seemed convincing, but beneath, the metal still quivered. Molten, hungry for a form not yet found. My strength a brief illusion, hollow beneath the veneer, unable to endure the weight of being. I cooled unevenly, without frame or support. Pressure buckled the gossamer shell, edges curling like burned paper. A slow implosion. A soft, quiet failure. And when at last I hardened, I set in the wrong shape. A flawed casting, ringing false when struck. If I had waited, let the fire settle, let time cool the core, perhaps I would have held.
