13.10.2025 18:30 โ ๐ 935 ๐ 141 ๐ฌ 41 ๐ 16I hear birds on the roof. I go out and scatter seed, open my arms to them. In my dreams my arms sprout feathers and I lift into the air. I think the birds are whispering together because they are also in my dreams, waiting for me to fly. I scratch my arms and a small feather falls.

A Red Squirrel stands upright on the forest floor, tiny paws clasped neatly together as if waiting nervously to ask a question. Its wide eyes and hesitant posture give it an endearing, almost apologetic expression, as though feeling rather unsure about interrupting.
Red Squirrels always looking like they're about to politely interrupt

Fungi and other finds from a visit to the Great Wood near Keswick in the English Lake District last week - particularly exciting to find Hen-of-the-woods (Maitake) which Iโve never found before, itโs not common in the UK. Pen and watercolour sketches.

In Memoriam
On that stormy night
a top branch broke off
on the biggest tree in my garden.
It's still up there.ย Though its leaves
are withered black among the green
the living branches
won't let it fall.

Devour Your Nice Things Burn the fancy candle. Wear the special-occasion dress. Pop the good bottle. Scribble hurry slowly on the first page of your leather-bound notebook. Gorge on your pearls, your cashmere, your silks. Use the high-end eyeshadow until the silver pan winks back. Baptize your wrists in Baccarat Rouge, a little extra for the collar. Devour your nice thingsโ don't let the best go cold on your plate. The anticipation of living is empty calories and you were meant to be full. Elise M Powers

"The grim, grand African forests are like a great library, in which, so far, I can do little more than look at the pictures, although I am now busily learning the alphabet of their language, so that I may some day read what these pictures mean.

12.10.2025 15:18 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The Visitor Each autumn night my visitor comes tucked between the soot-black of a crowโs glossed wing. My visitor talks in fir and ash, my visitor taught me how to sing. He brings me tales of war and woe, convenes in the hallways of princes and kings. My visitor is both steward and ship, my visitor tells me everything. He is a seer and a soldier, too; he speaks in the language of flight. My visitor chants to the deer and birds, from the ridges where his harsh voice hides. He tangles the brambles, the hedges, my hair; he does not leave my side. He comes down the chimney like a story to tell, he flickers like candle and light. He sleeps among white stars and moonsnore and frost, with the dusk underneath his skin. He twirls my words into poems and hymn, my breath is his sister and kin. He frightens the children and sailors alike, but Iโm not afraid of his din. Even when Iโm alone in the hush of myself, in my empty lap thereโs the wind.
