I just went through the Amazon profile of an author who’s put out 151 full-length novels since April. What’s your excuse?

…oh, you’re actually writing yours? And not using AI to generate everything down to the title and cover? Yeah, that’s fair, actually.

That’s a lot less cynical than my view, which is that a lot of writers are doing it to say they wrote a book, which is only enough motivation for 10k words before you start to hate the act.

I’ll push it one further: you should actually ENJOY the act of writing. Way too many people who write because it’s How You Produce a Book. And whether good or bad, you can always tell if a book was loved by its author.

To be clear, any meaningful amount of success is largely pay to play, even in trad publishing…but only after you’ve actually written an excellent novel. Money has nothing to do with the quality of an author themselves

I say let them try and fail. It’s strange to try and gatekeep writing itself if they’ll never make it past the gates of publication anyway.
