A quote text graphic of Tim Farron with the words saying: "It is an absolute scandal that families are being told to limit their water use this summer, while these failing water firms are letting over a billion litres a day go to waste through leaky pipes. Firms that fail to fix leaks should be fined, and water company bosses should be stopped from pocketing eye-watering bonuses. Enough is enough. The public shouldnβt be forced to pay the price for the water companiesβ failure."
Water companies are failing thousands of families by refusing to put their own house in order. Enough is enough, the public shouldn't have to bear the cost of their failures.

Photo of a water sample being taken. Guardian headline "Ofwat to be abolished as ministers look to create new water regulator"
At last, the Government has listened to the Liberal Democrats. Since November 2022, we have been calling for Ofwat to be scrapped.
If the Government do not commit to this, it would be a dereliction of their duty and a betrayal of millions of customers across the country.
Sewage in our waterways is a disgusting sign of a broken system.
Todayβs report backs what weβve always said: we need to scrap and replace Ofwat and finally hold these water companies to account.
For years the Conservatives and Labour sneered at us for raising the sewage scandal. Now finally the government is acting.
This is a victory for all those local communities who said enough is enough - but if Labour think it is job done they have got another think coming.
Liberal Democrats have been leading the fight to scrap Ofwat and replace it with a tougher regulator that will take action against polluters.
Today, the Government appears to have finally listened.
We will be holding their feet to the fire to ensure these promises are delivered.
If the Government is truly serious about protecting our precious rivers and lakes from sewage, then it should back my bill.

This would have powers to:
- Revoke the licence of poorly performing water companies swiftly
-Reform water companies to put local environmental experts on their boards
-Set legally binding targets on sewage discharges

Ofwat have failed to hold polluting water companies to account.
This week in Parliament, I presented a Private Members Bill calling for Ofwat to be abolished and replaced with a new, tougher regulator called the Clean Water Authority.

Absolutely over the moon that the Government has finally approved vital plans to upgrade the A66.
These huge improvements are long overdue, and will be essential to reducing congestion, boosting our economy, and saving lives.
Thanks to everyone who campaigned so hard!
cwherald.com/news/long-aw...
We were told to expect a decision on the vital project to dual the A66 between Penrith and Scotch Corner in the Spending Review. This didn't materialise.
Almost a month later, and we've still heard nothing.
People are being left in limbo.
My letter to the Transport Secretaryπ
But that's not what last night's vote was about.
It was about whether disabled people would continue to get the vital support they need to live their lives with dignity.
And that's why I was proud to vote against the Government's appalling plans.
Yes we need to and bring the benefits bill down.
We do that by growing the economy, getting people into work, and building more genuinely affordable homes so that we arenβt having to subsidise hard working people who are nevertheless on the cusp of poverty.
A few people saying 'it's terrible that MPs can't even cut just Β£5bn from the welfare budget'.
I'm sorry but if we can't continue to provide funding to support people with conditions like Parkinsons to wash and get dressed then we might as well give up being a civilised country
Let's be absolutely clear what the Government's 'concessions' to the Welfare Bill mean:
If you currently have a condition like Parkinsons or MS then you will get support to wash and cook for yourself. But someone diagnosed next year gets nothing.
This is just utterly appalling.
At the heart of the sewage scandal is a regulatory system which has failed.
Liberal Democrats will continue our campaign to replace Ofwat with a new regulator to clean up our waterways for good.

A busy day out and about in Kendal on Friday - including a lovely visit to meet the team at the wonderful Herdy shop, and also an absolute joy to join the residents at Eskdale House for their garden tea party. Thanks so much for having me!
02.06.2025 09:21 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Utterly appalling decision.
These cuts threaten both the livelihoods of farmers (many of whom are already earning less than the minimum wage), and the future of our treasured environment.
The Chancellor must think again.
This should be the final nail in the coffin for Thames Water.
It needs to be turned into a public benefit company and Ofwat needs to be scrapped and replaced with a real regulator with teeth.

Congratulations Cllr Tim Martland and our entire team for a brilliant result!
In rural communities, we particularly depend on volunteer drivers to help people who live hours away from hospital appointments.
I asked the Health Minister to direct integrated care boards and trusts to support those volunteer drivers, so that volunteers are valued and patients are not isolated.

This is yet another appalling decision from a deeply unpopular government who are desperately scrabbling around for votes

Banning care workers from overseas will have devastating consequences for our loved ones who desperately need care, for our care homes who are struggling to recruit the staff they need, and on our already overstretched hospitals.

For British farmers, yesterday's announcement of a US-UK trade deal has led to a lot of uncertainty and unanswered questions around food standards, beef, labelling, ethanol, and more.
