Ffs. All this government had to do was be better than the last one. It's not difficult, given that one engaged in the wholesale slaughter of elderly people and yet, it seems beyond them. The right to trial by jury is a cornerstone of democratic justice, even I know that and I'm an idiot.

Aside from introducing ‘two-tier’ justice, it completely opens the door for all out assault on judges from the political & press extremes - then hungrily feeding their voice for politicising it further & removing independence.
