Dune 1984s Gom Jabbar scene, but it's in French.
Paul Atreides: "Qu'est ce qu'il y a dans la boite?"
Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, with a moustache and smoking a cigarette: "Pain"

There is indeed a bunch of Baguettes in the box.

("What's in the box?" "Bread.")

A Ruru Owl is thoroughly bedraggled, wrapped in a blue towel after a bath. His cat-like eyes are fixed on the camera, wide and yellow. Feathers around the chest are matted and parted to expose skin that looks like, well... uncooked chicken breast. Green plastic boxes appear on a concrete slab behind.

A full body shot of the wet owl, sans towel. His Sid Vicious plumage is blackened by the wetness, and some barbs are stuck to the the feather shafts, creating gaps in the wings that look like see-through ribs. The photo really is something: imagine a yellow-eyed Koosh ball on a swivel, sticking out from a tarred turkey carcass. A truly bizarre and sorry-looking creature, but if it's any assurance the owl is fine. His legs are bowed with tan-feathered toes splayed out below. He stands upon a white net inside a green plastic box, with wooden perches around the edge.

Another angle of this Cronenbergian horror with Disney eyes. This one's taken a little closer, and the owl's leg stance is sturdier. If you ignore the whole looking-like-a-drowned-abomination aspect, he's far more photogenic and you know what? Kinda badass. Like a character-select screen in an RPG. What's interesting is we don't often see the definition of an owl's neck (the head feathers typically merge into the shoulder like a lumpy snowman), but here with everything matted and shaped to the owl's bone structure he appears almost humanoid.

How can this possibly be the same owl? Feathers now dry, our Ruru friend has resumed his original puffy shape, like an inflatable butternut squash. His eyes are still wide, but rather than taking up 90% of his face, they're now (in terms of size) like finger holes in a bowling ball. His legs are held by a bare-handed rehabilitator. His chest feathers are an impressive medley of brushstrokes (the owl not the person) in white, tan and dark brown. The background is a garage interior, with ladder, workbench, and sheets of soft plastic strewn about before a wall of cardboard boxes and metal rolling door.

Happy #Owloween! It's the 31st of #Owltober and we've saved one of the best for last: A wet Ruru Owl at Wildbase Recovery after a bath for flaky skin. Pics pre- and post- blowdry are night and day. From the Larchives: The Rocky Horus Picture Scroll. One of my favorite works. I had the assistance of an Egyptology PhD student to translate the Time Warp phonetically. Enjoy :)

Shame wasn't your intent, I get it, but it's how it came across to me.

The community part of the feelings is really important. It's really valuable knowing that there are lots of people mourning with you and feeling the same thing you are. Burying that in a journal doesn't build community.

3) On the helplessness angle - not every post needs to be comprehensive. Even when you have a large platform, sometimes posts are just about feelings. I think it's unfair to expect people to cover every aspect of a situation when they're clearly unpacking feelings.

21.10.2025 12:12 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It's about connecting with a community - and that connection is just as important when it's about sadness and loss as when it's about anger or joy. Using his platform to share that feeling is, I think, just as important as the inspirational/do-something posts.

2) Communal mourning of the loss of an icon is a perfectly valid thing. I think his post spoke to a feeling of loss that a lot of people share. Sharing that feeling publicly is just as important as the dancing, inflatables, and signs at protests.

I strongly disagree with this take.

1) Your post reads to me as if you're shaming someone for their feelings. That just feels really shitty.

11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible
12 operations?
13
A.
Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic.
When I
14
set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did
15
was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible
16
program at the P.P. Shirshov Institute in Moscow, a guy named
17|
Professor
I. I did that through a mutual friend
18
of ours, a guy named
, who is one of the preeminent
underwater cinematographers in the world. And had been on a
20
submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the
21
Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was
22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.

INTERVIEW OF 10 BY LCDR 11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible 12 operations? 13 A. Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic. Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

Itโ€™s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

I find myself thinking about the overlap of the "do your own research" folks and GenAI addiction. I feel like people inclined to not trust experts are ripe for GenAI capture/addiction. Since the GenAI isn't a person, any competitiveness about the "expert" acting "better" than you vanishes.
