On Mongabayโ€™s legacy I am often asked what Mongabayโ€™s legacy is, or what it might turn out to be. The question usually comes with an assumption that a quarter-century of publishing should yield a tidy answer. It doesโ€ฆ

Mongabay didnโ€™t aim to reinvent environmental journalism. It grew by filling gaps โ€” reporting consistently from places far from power, building long-term memory, and backing local journalists as foreign bureaus disappeared.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the renowned American journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and legendary conservationist known as the "Guardian of the Everglades" or "mother of the Everglades" for her tireless efforts to protect Florida's Everglades ecosystemโ€”most famously through her influential 1947 book The Everglades: River of Grassโ€”sits thoughtfully outdoors in a charming black-and-white portrait. The elderly Douglas, in her later years, wears a classic wide-brimmed straw hat with a dark band, thick-rimmed round glasses, and a striped button-up shirt or blouse with a collar. Her hands are clasped together in front of her as she gazes directly at the camera with a warm, knowing smile. Surrounded by lush tropical foliage in the background, the image captures her enduring spirit and dedication to environmental preservation. #MarjoryStonemanDouglas #Everglades #Conservation #Environment #Florida

The astronomical debt from student loans puts kids from lower income group families off going to university and discourages others from studying courses that won't offer "a return."

That was obvious from the start and it's also turned some university courses into little more than finishing schools

Last week on the trail, I found one of my favorite quiet miracles.

These are Pipevine flowers โ€” easy to miss, blooming before the leaves arrive, long before most things wake up.

Theyโ€™re part of a remarkable relationship that eventually gives rise to the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly.

A macro photo looking down at a moth roosting on the ground, on a thin twig over sand. There are some green, succulent-like leaves in the upper right corner. The moth has patches of black, orange, and white, helping camouflage it. The trailing edges of the wings have dark gray fringe. It's a pretty insect.

Plumipalpiella martini, a rice-grain size moth endemic to Red Rock Canyon SP in CA's Mojave Desert. No one knows what the caterpillars look like or what plant(s) they eat. Until my friend Krystle and I took photos two years ago, I don't think they'd been photographed in over 40 years. #BugSky ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ“ท
