This is a very good description of why learning has to involve the agency of learners and not just 'instructing' them. Learning doesn't just = memory.

The belief that we can get inside children's minds so they memorise knowledge in the 'correct' order to understand concepts is weird if you think about it. We can demonstrate and explain how they work but we can't do the thinking for our learners. These are essentially discussions about control.

Yes! And weโ€™re have to able to attract those highly skilled support staff who are so essential. Currently Aldi pays more. I have interviewed 3 times now for a SEND TA with no success.

I don't think there's any secret about the best ways to meet additional needs in the classroom. High ratios, lots of staff knowledge about best practice, good quality resources, adaptive environments, working in partnership with families. But all this takes time, energy and needs funding.

Yes - far too many children are expected to do things they are developmentally not ready for, and we wonder why so many present with additional needs!

You have to be vigilant in an outdoor playground but in soft play you know they canโ€™t get out, fall on hard surfaces etc

14.02.2026 09:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

If I have a 10 hour day with them the couple of hours in soft play are my break for coffee and a book!

14.02.2026 08:45 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

They take their shoes off - I tell them where I am if they want me and they are off! At 74 yrs I simply couldnโ€™t keep up with them! I used to go in when the 2 yr old refused to stay in the baby area because he needed me but was thrilled when I wasnโ€™t needed!

14.02.2026 08:43 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I engage if they come out for a drink or a rest but I would get very bored just sitting there - it isnโ€™t even as if I can see them. I only go in very poor weather- outdoor playgrounds you can see them and they often involve me and are much better all round.

Should parents be banned from using mobile phones at playcentres? A playcentre group has said it will test out a ban on parents using their phones during half term to encourage them to

I donโ€™t really get this because if I take my grandsons, aged 7 and 5yrs - I donโ€™t see them. They move so fast that even if I tried to engage they would have disappeared! I went around with the little one when he needed help, but he doesnโ€™t now. I take a book to read.

Seeing Matt Weston get his gold medal and our flag flying, that's what makes me feel proud; not when our flag is flying from a lamppost, put there by those trying to stir division.

Matt Weston slides to skeleton gold as Team GB finally win medal at Winter Olympics * Briton triumphs by nearly a second in Milano Cortina * First British man to win individual winter gold since 1980 And on the seventh day, Great Britain finally won their first medal of the Olympics. At nine oโ€™clock on Friday night Matt Weston, the man his teammates call โ€œCaptain 110%โ€, won the gold in the menโ€™s skeleton after four faultless races across the two days of competition. The 28-year-old broke the track record at the Cortina Sliding Centre four times in the space of four races, and won in a final combined time of 3min 43.33sec, almost a full second ahead of the runner-up, Germanyโ€™s Axel Jungk. Weston is the first British man ever to win the Olympic skeleton title. And he did it all despite starting the year with a four-inch tear in his right quad that meant he had to miss pre-season training. Continue reading...
