I also toyed with giving him a couple little antennae decor bits, as seen in the lower left. If I'm going the flower mantis route, in some species males have big long pectinate antennae, so like a big long comb, but I also didn't want to make them too far off from the silhoeutte. idk, we'll see.

I didn't base him on a specific mantis species, I took elements from a few species. Somewhere between a shield mantis and a giant devil's flower mantis for the upper back carapace, vague inspo between an Asian flower mantis and European mantis for the wings.

Someone actually did the math and Silksong's ratio of male-to-female characters is pretty evenly split, but I feel like a good chunk of the guys are secondary characters to some degree, and more of the female NPCs are important to the game in some way.

I thought so too, until they referred to him with male pronouns in all the official material and in-game!

A reference sheet of a bronze insect automaton, from the world of Silksong. Constructed by the Architects, but purpose long forgotten after lying dormant in the lands beneath it. Unknown how he got there. He was picked up and intended to be scrapped for parts by a treehopper named Caulkin native to Shellwood, only to find not only was it still functional, it was alive. With soul somehow infused into it. Just broken enough to be dormant. He didn't have a name before, or at least one he could recall, so Caulkin took to calling him Alder. Since being repaired, whatever hold the Citadel may have had over him is also long gone. He quit enjoys the difference in the landscapes over the elaborate gilding of the Citadel, and what life bugs have versus the pious reserve he recalls. He's quiet, elegant, and horrifically naive. Caulkin does his best to try and keep him from getting into too much trouble.

the doodle on the left is an old design from 2019, which was when the first news of Silksong dropped. the middle is an initial sketch-over to tweak it, and the right is the general vibe I decided to go with.

Further refining the design, an automaton insect to go along with the automaton bugs present in the game.

Guess who Alder (the automaton) immediately decided to set his sights on. Which, for reasons clear to those who have either played the game or just have read about him, know is a huge problem.

A sketch page of three loose anthropomorphic insect designs, starting with one from 2019 on the far left, one in the middle that's a loose trace/tweak of that, and a new one on the far right that has similar elements but is its own design. at first I was gonna lean more into inspo from the Architects, as the 2019 design coincidentally had a lot of similar elements, but he's morphing into some kind of... idk, either armored bug or just straight up an automaton being. I like the idea of having some kind of firelight coming from inside and smoke emanating from the eye-holes at times.

I found this little critter in my sink, what should I do?

The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.

When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.

Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?
