I work with small businesses to streamline and connect their tech stack. I'm an American who has been living in Switzerland for 8 years. I'll share tips on business tech, my travails learning french and probably a bit of a politics here and there.

β€œMy name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Switzerland launches its own open-source AI model Switzerland has just released Apertus, its open-source national Large Language Model (LLM) that it hopes would be an alternative to models offered by companies like OpenAI.

A typo in the link -- but this one works

Switzerland just released Apertus, a completely open AI model. Not just "open weights" but everythingβ€”training data, process, code. While other nations race to build AI, the Swiss are redefining what "national AI" means... 🧡

Here's the thing about AI -- think of it as a new intern who's read EVERYTHING, but has no practical knowledge. They really want to please you and will not admit that they don't know the answer to something -- if they don't know they'll make something up that sounds good.

From a paper I just read: the effect of worship attendance on one's willingness to pay higher tax so everyone can have better health care across nations. Note in most nations, the association is positive, though mostly non-significant. Just in the USA where the association is negative & significant.

Tedious to point this out, but:

- When a tongue-tied Biden said "President of Mexico" instead of "Prez of Egypt," it was a several day story.

-Hours after Trump says whoever appointed J Powell made a big mistake (it was him), the episode appears not to merit a story on any national-media sites.

I've noticed this problem myself -- And in real life I'd guess it's worse than in these tests. I often get bored and distracted while waiting for the AI response and get caught up in other things, which just slows things down more.

Republican Presidents can cancel/shut down the Dept of Education because, even though only Congress can shut down departments ..., ... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ YOLO?

This is patently false.

DHS has authority to question and search people coming into the country at points of entry.

But ICE may not detain and question anyone without reasonable suspicion β€” and certainly not based on their physical appearance alone.

This lawlessness must stop.

Infographic titled β€œOne Court, Two Standards” compares how the Supreme Court used emergency powers to rule on lower-court injunctions against the Biden and Trump administrations. Two panels show:
β€’	Biden Administration: Lower courts blocked policies in 21 cases. All 21 cases are represented by red squares, indicating that 0% of injunctions/TROs were lifted by SCOTUS.
β€’	Trump Administration: Lower courts blocked policies in 86 cases. 66 green squares and 20 red squares show that 77% of injunctions/TROs were lifted by SCOTUS.

Key takeaway box below reads:
β€œUsing its β€˜shadow docket,’ the Supreme Court granted emergency relief to lift 77% of lower-court injunctions against the Trump administration. It lifted 0% of those against the Biden administration.”

Sources and notes below include: CourtListener data through July 7, 2025; analysis by Adam Bonica.

The Supreme Court’s β€œshadow docket” has cast very different shadows depending on which party holds the White House.

When lower courts blocked Trump admin policies, SCOTUS intervened on an emergency basis to lift those orders in 77% of cases.

For the Biden administration, that number was 0%.
