Gateway was the first science fiction book I checked out from the adult section of the library. Up until then, I was hitting all of the Heinlein juveniles in the children's section. I was probably 12, so, uh, 47 years ago!

There are several more books. I've read them all, but the later ones weren't as good. Not bad, but I don't reread them like I do the first two.

Gateway and its sequel, Beyond the Blue Event Horizon, are both great books.
