71/72 - Cocteau Twins - Tiny Dynamine/ Echoes In A Shallow Bay (4AD) All the singles to top the NME Indie Charts since its launch in 1981, complete with an overview of the other music in the charts each week.

Blog update: The tail end of 1985 saw The Cocteau Twins scoring back-to-back indie number ones with the "Tiny Dynamine" and "Echoes In A Shallow Bay" EPs. It was a fitting end to a year of chart dominance for them - the final hurrah before the jangle and thrash of C86 moved in.

Oh The White People is almost indescribably good. To me it feels a lot more immersive and really-happening-right-now than much modern horror, it hasn't taken on any of that cosy vibe some of the lesser "classic" tales of terror have acquired. It's just freaky and spellbinding

1976 #totp! I enjoyed Cockney Rebel but am a bit freaked out by Demis Roussos and his voice, which I always expect to be accompanied by that queasy death swirl of thousands of windows opening almost but not quite on top of each other on one's CRT monitor

Sheryl Crow out there singing like a sedated down-on-her-luck ventriloquist without even a murderous dummy to recommend her performance

I just had a Minto from one of those Discovery surprise flavour packs and it was purplish grey.and tasted of sweat with a backnote of the taste you get in your mouth when you stand too close to an open bottle of meths

A man-size and highly unofficial minion effigy, currently disguised as a ghost with a just-goosed expression and an absolutely massive witch hat flopping like a limp dick against the bus stop roof. It has a broom at its left side and holds a pumpkin-shaped cloth bag in its right hand.

The left hand of the minion in its familiar raised middle finger stance, kind of wrapped around the broom handle. The hand and forearm are gaffer taped up in a Crow-like manner.

The smiling pumpkin cloth bag depending camply from the right hand. The bag is filled with pine cones from the trees that frame the minion in all seasons.

Local Minion is actually relatively undisturbing in its Hallowe'en get-up, and I note with approval that they have taped up its fuck-you finger. That whole hand had been mangled by an unknown agent and was shedding whitish-grey filling.

I want the pumpkin bag and flaccid witch hat to be my friends

Yeah if I spoke more Spanish I'd be over there already annoying that driving school they have in Barcelona that takes all the French (assuming it isn't a loophole that's been closed now! It was a couple of years ago that was a big topic of conversation lol).

Oh I'm glad Almond showed you due respect :) I listened to Soft Cell all the time in my 20s. I still remember exactly where I was when I saw the videos to 'Bedsitland' and 'Frustration', like the death of Princess Diana lol

I have been seriously considering moving back to the UK just to learn to drive, and the UK test situation isn't a rose garden. For years now people in the south of France have been hopping over to Spain to get their driving license. It's insane.

Yeah, everything about learning to drive a proper car in France is made difficult to the point of brutality. Not the actual driving, but the way you access lessons, the laws around how you can practice, test waiting lists, etc. The driving school system is so very up itself, yet also so bent.

Thought I'd share this reply I posted re early stuff from The Grid, from when I was a professional backing singer - I was quite embarrassed about this one at the time because I thought that my vocal would be really quiet on the track, and I can really hear my Scouse accent on some of the words 😆

It is abysmal, yeah. But it did confirm me in my decision. And it's proven to be a blessing in disguise that I couldn't find a flat in Saint Hilaire. I'd have been livid if I'd signed a year's rental and was tied to that town now!

Still love the hotel Le Cygne though, that was awesome 🦢💜
