One Earth May cover: a deflating blow-up globe made of plastic against an orange background.

(1/9) Our theme for the May issue of One Earth features the continued negotiations towards a Global #PlasticsTreaty. While the initial goal was to finalize the treaty last year, negotiations will continue this August. What is needed for a successful agreement?

Plastics pollution exacerbates the impacts of all planetary boundaries This paper proposes a way to understand plastics pollution on a global scale from a full life cycle: from material extraction to Earth system effects. We suggest a set of control variables based on how they affect the other processes in the planetary boundaries framework. We bring a precautionary approach and long time scale into the frame. The results show that plastics pollution has knock-on effects on other major environmental problems such as climate change and biodiversity loss, exacerbating their impacts.

Even if Norway dismantles the oil & gas industry, there is a need for new investment & there will be a lot of value creation (income).

Maintaining production at current levels requires massive investment in new areas & significant risk of stranded assets.

But we all need to eat and why we desperately need sustainable, resilient and inclusive agri-food systems.

Should California Subsidize Out-of-State Biofuels or In-State Electric Vehicles? - Kleinman Center for Energy Policy Energy policy research from the University of Pennsylvania

Did you know how many billions of dollars California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard makes drivers pay to out-of-state biofuel producers?

Turns out it's a lot β€”Β a peak of about $2.9 billion in 2021, which is more than enough to give a $7500 rebate to all of the battery EVs sold in 2023.

A horizon scan of biological conservation issues for 2025 We discuss the outcomes of our 16th horizon scan of issues that are novel or represent a considerable step-change and have the potential to substantially affect conservation of biological diversity in the coming decade. From an initial 96 topics, our international panel of 32 scientists and practitioners prioritised 15 issues. Technological advances are prominent, including metal and non-metal organic frameworks, deriving rare earth elements from macroalgae, synthetic gene drives in plants, and low-emission cement. We include new insights into accelerated impacts of changes to Antarctic ice masses and air and water quality. We hope that anticipating and mitigating negative impacts, and making best use of new opportunities related to these issues, will contribute to better outcomes for biological diversity.

Always an interesting read πŸ§ͺ🌎
