I like coaching boys, and I'm learning how to teach a whole bunch of new skills, but oh my goodness is it difficult. Just have to remind myself that everything takes practice, and I am practicing alongside the kids. We practice being able to concentrate, and we practice self-motivation. 3/

The world has treated them differently all their life, so your starting point in building the ability to work hard and listen and behave is behind. They've always had leniency, while girls are told that the same behaviour is unladylike. 2/

Coaching boys is the same as coaching girls. You have the same expectations and the same consequences to behaviour and they can produce the same results.
There's only one problem. 1/

I definitely am guilty of this, seeing disabled people as invisible. It's a deeply entrenched societal norm that takes time to unpick and push against. It takes practice, so practice. Directly address the person with a disability, not whoever is with them, and address them as an actual person. 4/4

It has reverted back however, as Frames gets clocked less as trans. So we do this weird back and forth with random people where they talk to her, I repeat the conversation that should have been directed at me all along, and she replies. 3/4

This changed briefly when Frames transitioned initially, because then she was the invisible one, and people would address me instead. I was the less scary person to acknowledge, wheelchair user trumps trans person I guess. 2/4

When I am out and about in my wheelchair, especially if someone else is pushing me, I turn invisible. People only talk to whoever is pushing me.
Which is especially difficult because it's usually Frames, and she is deaf, and so will look to me to repeat whatever the speaker has said. 1/4
