The key task is to ensure that the EU and the UK are able to defend their interests in the face of an, at best, โ€˜unreliableโ€™, and at worst, hostile, US.

And that isnโ€™t going to be easy. 6/6

The National Weather Service took more than 150 years to build. Forget flight or the internet or whatever - public-service systems like this are the marvels of the modern world. Conceptual cathedrals, constructed across generations and dedicated to the public good.

Fascinating new paper out in @nature.com on the importance of Small Scale Fisheries. Lots of great information on catch, nutrition, livelihoods, etc. The #sharkscience factoid I found was that only 0.2% of the SSF catch is sharks, rays or chimaerans.

The most depressing thing is that in the field of international dev't which has 000 of economists, consultants, NGOs, foundations and the like no one has written that what we are witnessing is simply destroying any intellectual basis on which this system was erected. And this not Trump who did it.

For enslaved people, the holiday season was a time for revelry โ€“ and a brief window to fight back Whether it was spent feasting or plotting escapes, the week between Christmas and the new year offered a rare opportunity for enslaved men, women and children to reclaim their humanity.

During #slavery, the holiday season was a brief chance for the enslaved to plan escapes and rebellions amid distracted owners. A historian tells the story of resistance: https://buff.ly/3BGaYXo

A geometric Op Art pattern featuring repeating diagonal stripes in teal, orange, and cream colors. The stripes create a dynamic, three-dimensional illusion of undulating waves or folds across the square composition. The pattern consists of regular, alternating parallelograms that appear to curve and warp despite being composed of straight lines, characteristic of Franco Grignani's optical art style.

Ring-shaped odor coding in the antennal lobe of migratory locusts Migratory locusts, genetically expressing the calcium sensor GCaMP6s in olfactory sensory neurons, have an unconventional, ring-shaped olfactory code of glomerular clusters in the antennal lobe, a pattern that occurs consistently throughout development.

In the name of filling Bluesky with science: I am happy to highlight our recent study showing a novel odor coding rule in migratory locusts by genetically expressing GCaMP in olfactory neurons!

There are many valid explanations for the success of the far right around the world. But much of it comes down to this:

The right has realised that anything is possible, while the left has persuaded itself that nothing is possible.

The James Webb Space Telescopeโ€™s mid-infrared image of galaxies IC 2163 and NGC 2207 recalls the iciness of long-dead bones mixed with eerie vapors. Two large luminous โ€œeyesโ€ lie at the galaxiesโ€™ cores, and gauzy spiral arms reach out into the vast distances of space.

Webbโ€™s mid-infrared image excels at showing where the cold dust glows throughout these galaxies โ€” and helps pinpoint where stars and star clusters are buried within the dust. Find these regions by looking for the pink dots along the spiral arms. Many of these areas are home to actively forming stars that are still encased in the gas and dust that feeds their growth. Other pink dots may be objects that lie well behind these galaxies, including extremely distant active supermassive black holes known as quasars.

As fellow animals, our ancestors took time to marvel at the sheer intensity of the lives of their sisters and brothers.

Now we just call them species. And we dutifully count their disappearance like accountants. Andrew Nikiforuk writes.
