I don't believe that "few seem to care" about the near-annihilation of youth clubs. It's one of the issues I hear people caring about passionately every day. I can believe that few with the political power to effect large-scale change care enough to use it. But many people care very deeply indeed.

But I will always write anyway. Because I didn't choose to be a writer. I came out one. And it's how I process the world. I can't stop and wouldn't stop even if I could.

I can only write about what matters to me in the moment. I can only write when I have something to say through storytelling as metaphor. So okay if there is no room for novels that can't get wedged into more and more specific, narrow marketing categories then there is no room for me.

There are a hell of a lot of bestselling books, and powerful books - award winning books - from past generations that straddled what we call genres and would have been hard to find a place on a subcategory shelf. The broadest definition (ex: "Science Fiction & Fantasy") was the best category.

I don't write to arbitrary categories invented to sell a product. These categories are a great way to get books that fit into them to the readers who want them. But I didn't pick the age I picked for arbitrary reasons. I never have. That's not what I write for. This is how I am built as a person.

And I didn't feel like explaining that since the day I was born every story I have ever told has been to a purpose. I always had something specific to say. It was subconsious but it's obvious to my adult self that my child self was using fiction, mostly fantasy to tackle serious subjects.

Had a chat with a friend who once wrote a novel that was difficult for any agent to get published and it took forever but it did find a home and a hit.

I was saying I have a MS between age categories (straddles YA and NA) and that likely makes it hard to get an agent for. He said just age it up.

We really have to stop turning people into statistics and take every individual as they are.

If one of my siblings had ID'd as trans female I don't even want to imagine how much abuse they would have suffered having traditional masculine ideas applied to them, having men decide they need some kind gendered, sexist "help" to make them "better". Every child is an individual, not an archetype.

My five brothers have DIFFERENT NEEDS. They are wildly different people. One needs his family to leave him and for him to get court mandated therapy so he stops abusing people. One is gay but he was supposed to you know act like a man so I had to listen to him sob his heart out as a kid.

This is someone with a plan. She would have my vote if I lived in South Carolina. Since I don’t, I’m sharing to make sure more people see this.

There are ALWAYS kids/teens whose needs don't get met, who need help outside of their family system or toxic culture - of all genders.

Of all genders. And boys do not need a narrow, sexist gendered definition of help anymore than girls do. Sexist ideations of gender are harmful instead of helpful.

When I was homeless in 2019, the Salvation Army shelter refused to give me a bed (even though they were available), because I was on immunosuppressant meds and they didn’t want to be responsible or liable if I got more sick or died on premises. They’d rather I die on the street.

That's a chilling observation.
