I was thinking about this more. Maybe swapping out the word truth for the concept of interpretation is more helpful. Truth is far more loaded a term than I wanted to convey. This question still has me thinking.

I also think there is a slice of the population that thinks being in the presence of 'cool people' is what everyone wants. Its a probelm when these people get in charge of things (in general). Often follow gatekeeping, barriers, and exclusion to maintain what is 'cool.'

We are - at our core - telling stories about people. Stories that we believe matter, and tell us about our past, present, and future. If the person tasked with this doesn't understand people or the horrors of our times - it would be very difficult to believe their witness & good news.

I believe the Church has a role is to be a bearer of truth. If we fail to name obvious contemporary truths that we can see.... why should anyone believe us when it comes to truths carried through time and of things unseen. A major tenant of theology is the pursuit/creation of orthodoxy - aka truth.

It feels to me like the Church has this same dilemma. I do really think that many of us clergy underestimate how cool people want Church to be. I think they want parts of it to be dusty and serious. A lived in institution that is millenia old - but open to all who wish to be with God.
