Carbon monoxide and Platelets: The role of CO in clotting | CO Research Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas commonly encountered in urban environments due to pollution, in occupational settings, and sometimes at home from faulty appliances. At toxic levels...

Thrilled our proposal on 'the effects of carbon monoxide on platelets' has been funded by CO Research Trust! Excited to study this under-researched area & provide new insights.

Anecdotally, this is also true for carbon monoxide. Generators can emit a large amount in some cases.

Air pollution controls weaker for larger emitters, research finds Diesel generators allowed to emit 48 times more nitrogen oxides than gas boilers producing same amount of energy

Some types of engines, turbines and chimneys are allowed to emit more pollution than others.

This will have significant implications for our #netzero future.

The weather is lovely so this is just a small reminder to never have a BBQ in an enclosed area, e.g. inside a tent or even under an awning. Also, even if coals are cold enough to hold with your bare hands, they can still emit significant amounts of carbon monoxide. #carbonmonoxide

Our research is currently all about carbon monoxide and its impact on health, but I find it is not really possible to not pay attention to wider air pollution patterns.

Unthinkable just 10 years ago:

Almost 3/4 of the EU’s electricity in 2024 was from renewable energy sources and nuclear.

Gas and coal electricity generation is at record low levels.

For anyone interested in why CO alarm levels matter (or, indeed, just want to know at which CO level your alarm will sound - hint, it needs a pretty high dose), I can recommend this white paper: www.ncoaa.us/resources/lo...

Statue of girl killed by air pollution should be reminder of dangers of toxic air Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah became the first person in the world to officially die from air pollution. A statue of her will stand in a London park.

A powerful moment, charged with sadness for a life that could have been but also hope for the future and the huge fortitude of Ella’s mother and family.

Honoured to be in south east London this afternoon for the unveiling of Ella's statue.

U.S. Embassies Halt Air Quality Monitoring Abroad Since 2008, embassies and other diplomatic posts had been publishing data about local air quality. In many countries, it was the only reliable source of such information.

The US embassies’ air quality data were sometimes the only reliable data in an entire country and influenced local air quality policies. We used the Indonesian US embassy data extensively and co-located our lo-cost PM sensors by their regulatory-grade ones. πŸ˜”

This series by @momrunninglate.bsky.social is really nice. Good to see May-Britt Moser included as well. I remember her getting the Nobel, and was more than a little chuffed that it went to (a) a woman, (b) in neuroscience, from (c) my alma mater, NTNU. Really lovely work!

I work with CO, and can testify how dangerous the gas is. At home, I have one alarm in each room with a fuel burning appliance (recommended). Remember that CO can also move through walls in terraced houses.

A small reminder to make sure you have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in your home, that it is within date and bought from a reputable store (hint: many CO alarms available on e.g. amazon look nice but do not work at all).
