I've finished the main story and it's a mixed but positive bag. Things I really love, stuff I miss (the islands, the pilgrim village), the issues with the voice lines being mixed up. Not a lot added in to compensate. Generally good way to experience DQ7, but those issues I mentioned left me wanting.

and El Ciclo did lead to plot relevance! It leads to the construction of the Tallest Tower, which now just appears out of nowhere when you travel back to the present after saving a different island

I can see why it was cut (long dungeon and long side story) but I still miss it

The Sunken Citadel being cut down to one hallway sucks, but I'm not incredibly bothered by it. I wished they'd at least kept the village in the entry, but it was also a long and difficult dungeon that immediately followed another difficult dungeon. Probably the first real resource check in the OG

Also there's one specific line in Vogograd that displays the player name in all caps for some reason. Very bizarre little mistake there.

There are also just some weird oversights where voice lines in battle are mis-assigned to the different spells in English (Ruff says "Boom" when casting "Bang;" the Crag spells' voice lines use the DQ9 names like Mountain Mover) and Oomph and Oomphle are accidentally swapped

There's also instances where it seems like the script got changed/cut late. For example, in Buccanham, Maribel says "Let's ask your uncle where he got the holy water" but that scene was rewritten so that the party collects it with Pike! Maribel, you were there! You know where it came from!

Still bummed the time loop island (El Ciclo), the island where everyone thinks they're the Demon Lord (Gröndal), and the island that crosses over with the monster priest island (Providence) were cut. Those weren't directly plot-related but they were some of my favorite weird little stories

Aishe imo got shafted in the previous two releases, since she joins the party really late and doesn't do much in the story. She feels like a more integrated party member in this release, with some new events and being more active in the plot besides just "I'm a dancer I must dance"

Okay, having gotten further in this weekend, I feel a little different. After the game gets going, it slows down a bit. Sadly they cut three islands that I really liked, but generally I like how some of the events have been shuffled around. Makes sense to meet Aishe before Sir Mervyn.

Honestly yeah so far I think this is the worst (but best-looking) version. Unfortunately neither the original PS1 release or 3DS remake are easy to come by these days, so this is the version most people will be stuck with

It takes away everything that was interesting about one of the more memorable stories in DQ7, and also begs the question of, "if you knew that you needed to use them here, and how to get up there, why didn't you try using them???" It's baffling

In Reimagined, the old man says "The town is doomed. Actually, since you've traveled here, you can have these Angel Tears. By the way they won't work unless you use them from the highest point in the village, and there's a hidden passage to it by the tree over there."

But even once you have them, you can't just use them—you have to use clues around the village to find out that one of the kids had multiple secret hideouts and one of them leads to the highest point in the village. You use the tears there, and they uncurse the village

For example in other versions of Regenstein, the old man tells you to go away. You sleep at the inn and the statues start glowing, each one showing a different perspective of the petrification rain disaster. You piece together what happened, then the old man gives you the angel's tears.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is so... frustrating. The more interesting parts of DQ7 were figuring out what to do to solve the islands' problems, but everything has been so far simplified that it feels like the game's on autopilot.
