The phoenix will rise eventually, and when it does I hope folks recognize how unique 18F really was and build on it. Got to discuss the legacy of 18F for Lawfare with @deaves.bsky.social and @kevintfrazier.bsky.social. Here's the podcast version so you can listen on the go.

"Canada’s real strength is its unity and institutions. Canadians can paralyze military might through civil, non-violent resistance," writes Richard Sandbrook.

"Familiarity with these techniques could empower Canadian citizens to preserve a vibrant democracy."

I was trying to take photos of the moon, but they don't do it justice because, well, it's the moon.

What Good Can Dreaming Do? - Boston Review Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven and the radical imagination

After a half century of being told that the radical demand for a transformed social and economic order was a series of empty illusions, the choice to keep dreaming, even as we plant both feet firmly on the ground and in the streets, is exactly the kind of radical practice Le Guin would be proud of.

The image shows a devastated landscape, likely in the aftermath of a significant explosion. The scene is barren, with numerous trees stripped of their branches and buildings reduced to rubble. The area appears to be covered in snow, suggesting a winter setting. This image is consistent with the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion of 1917, which was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, caused by the collision of two ships, one carrying explosives, in the harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The explosion resulted in widespread destruction, as evidenced by the desolate and ruined environment in the photograph.

The 2.9 kiloton explosion destroyed nearly everything in an area of 2.6 kilometres in Halifax.
As water rushed back in to fill the void left by the explosion in the harbour, it created a tsunami 18 metres high.
About 1,600 people were killed instantly.

The image depicts a massive explosion with a large plume of smoke rising into the sky. The explosion appears to be quite significant, given the size and density of the smoke cloud. The photograph seems to be historical, possibly capturing a wartime event or a major industrial accident. The presence of people observing from a distance at the bottom of the image suggests that this event was of considerable interest or concern to those nearby. Given the context of previous images, this could be related to the Halifax Explosion of 1917, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, caused by the collision of two ships, one of which was carrying explosives.

At 9:05 a.m. the Mont-Blanc exploded.
The blast wave shot out from the ship at 1 km per second. At the centre of the explosion, the temperature was hotter than the surface of the sun. For a brief moment, the bottom of Halifax Harbour was exposed.

I worry about this a lot, and am thinking of paying to put the Examiner on the Internet Archive, but I haven't researched that to know whether that's a good idea or not, and I fear (given recent hack, etc.) even that isn't so permanent.

How Bluesky, Alternative to X and Facebook, Is Handling Growth The fledgling social media site has been flooded with new users since the election. It hasn’t all been easy.

β€œThe state of most social platforms right now is that users are locked in and developers are locked out. We want to build something that makes sure users have the freedom to move and developers have the freedom to build.” β€” @jay.bsky.team in @nytimes.com

One thing I'm trying to change, is avoiding "preaching to the choir."

I know that most of my followers, and this site in general, believes the same basic truths. So, repeating them over and over just generates noise.

It listens to all new posts and shows them as little stars across a night sky πŸŒƒ

The image depicts a black and white photograph of a man from the 19th century. He has dark, wavy hair and a mustache, and is wearing a high-collared shirt with a buttoned jacket over it. The photograph has a vintage, historical appearance, suggesting it might be from the mid to late 1800s.

On this day in 1885, Metis leader Louis Riel was put to death in Regina.
Riel led his people in two resistance movements to protect their culture and defend Metis rights.
