I love when someone does a viral tweet and they have a response that goes "Wow this sure blew up, check by main page for more stuff and support my pateron!" and it has a fraction of a percent of the engagement that the viral one does because people just like and move on

Yes, as with anything it can be done poorly, and be more obnoxious than anything, but just blanket saying that lives are something that don't serve a purpose now that games aren't in arcades and are trying to get money out of kids is just a wrongheaded argument imo

Playing a level so many times that you know where all the enemies and items are, having to know little tricks, rushing back to a save point at the earliest opportunity, grinding for lives and stuff, I think that all really makes a game leave much more of an impression.

but I think that line of thinking leads to games that are too smooth and polished and they just don't stick with you, you play through them once, its a mostly unobstructive affair, and then you never really go back to it.

and then the sense of relief when you finally get it. More modern games really do miss out on that.

There's this line of thought in game design circles that any so called "quit points" or parts where the player may be frustrated and leave are to be avoided,

Yeah yeah lives are an outdated game mechanic blah blah blah but you really lose out on a lot of tension, as you're getting closer to a hard save but your lives are running low and the more progress you make is more stuff you have to redo if you don't make it,

Donkey Kong Country 1 is hard, but I am enjoying it quite a bit.
