Although thinking about it more I think for STEM it's justifying why you personally have to take this particular class, whereas for the humanities there's an element of justifying why anyone would study this subject at all.

For Gen Ed classes at least I think this is a cross disciplinary phenomenon -- I definitely feel like I need to justify STEM classes to non-STEM majors.

These community effects in fandom are important -- I was briefly a huge Red Sox fan because I was living in Massachusetts the year they won the World Series and it was exhilarating being surrounded by people who were so into a Thing, but I have paid zero attention to the team since then.
