Connections and Conflicts With Seals in a Scottish Archipelago An environmental archaeologist investigates deep-time, mythical, and contemporary relations between seals and Orkney Islanders.

What a privilege to be among the final contributing authors for @sapiens.org. This piece grows out of my Earth fellowship in Orkney, Scotland, exploring deep-time human–seal relations.
Grateful for the chance to share it and keen to hear what you think. www.sapiens.org/culture/seal...

Egalitarianism is not Equality: Moving from outcome to process in the study of human political organisation | Behavioral and Brain Sciences | Cambridge Core Egalitarianism is not Equality: Moving from outcome to process in the study of human political organisation

"Models casting egalitarian societies as crucibles of equality perpetuate the factually uninformed notion that foragers are somehow more noble. Critiques portray egalitarianism as romantic fantasy. Neither characterization is wholly justified."

Selection of flint artefacts from the Late Mesolitic period (8000-3800 BCE) from the upland North York Moors, England. Microliths (narrow blade tools including arrow points & barbs) to the L side, Blades (knives) top R, and a typical core - what's left after removing the blades from a flint pebble with an antler hammer is bottom R. This selection is around (dated) 5000 to 3800 BCE. Flint here originated and was transported by people from beach deposits several miles/kms away, dragged by glaciers more than 12,000 years ago through what is now the North Sea (sea level rise).

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Project Researcher within UCD School of Archaeology.
This position supports the British Academy funded Prehistoric Policies project. PP examines the ways in which environmental policies in Britain and Ireland, and especially those focused on the Just Transition, use figures of the prehistoric past to support their claims, often using popular science accounts as their main sources. PP will analyse environmental discourse and policy and conduct interviews with key figures to better understand why future-facing documents refer back to the human past as well as what kinds of claims are made and whether they are well-founded. PP also includes public-facing events to raise awareness of the way in which prehistory is being used in environmental policy.
Fixed Salary: €46,700 Per Annum
Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on 3rd December 2025.

Prehistoric Policies seeks to understand how ideas about the deep time human past, or claims about our evolved human nature, are used to support the development of policies engaging with the climate and environment emergency.

Put simply, some of the claims are a bit iffy...

The senior leadership team at @edinburghuniversity plan to cut staff expenditure by Β£90m, which is more than 10%.

This would mean about 1 in 8 members of staff losing their jobs. With hundreds of jobs already lost, a further 1,000+ jobs are on the line.

Can I learn to be cool – even though I am garrulous, swotty and wear no-show socks? An international study found cool people are extroverted, open, hedonistic, adventurous, autonomous and powerful. At best, I have three of these traits. Could I change that?

Much to unpick... "Pezzuti’s interest is in coolness as ... economic labour or production. His hypothesis is that – just as tribal societies prize skilled hunters, who provide food for the group – today’s information economy turns on creativity and innovation."
