What this means: narrowing gender gaps takes more than seats in parliament ๐๏ธ. It needs civil rights โ๏ธ, womenโs voices in society ๐ฃ๏ธ, and visible role models in politics ๐ฉโ๐. When young women grow up in such an environment, they stay politically active for life ๐ช

Line graph showing how the gender gap in non-institutionalized political participation (petition signing, boycotting, protesting) changes with increasing levels of womenโs political empowerment. Two lines are plotted: one for empowerment at the survey year and one for empowerment during respondentsโ formative years (age 15โ20). In all three cases, higher levels of empowerment reduce the gender gap: women become more likely to participate compared to men.
Crucially: empowerment matters most during the formative years (adolescence & early adulthood).
Growing up in societies with empowered women leaves a long-lasting imprint on womenโs political behavior, thereby closing the gender gap.

I argue that these gaps shrink as women gain political empowerment, defined broadly as:
1๏ธโฃ Equal civil liberties
2๏ธโฃ Presence & voice in civil society and public discourse
3๏ธโฃ Political representation

If BSW consolidates its presence, it could pull voters from ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ โ but also open space for ๐๐จ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง with them.
Yet, alongside the AfD, BSW is ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฐ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ resonating with ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ง๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ and frustrated voters.

Factors explaining the propensity to vote BSW.
3๏ธโฃSupport for BSW is strongest among voters who are both ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ and ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ โ though the economic dimension matters more.
4๏ธโฃDissatisfaction with democracy, political distrust, and populist sentiments ๐๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ for BSW in both East and West.

Supporters of German parties in Eastern and Western Germany and their political position in the two-dimensional political space.
โถ๏ธ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ:
1๏ธโฃBSW (and AfD) supporters show ๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ค๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ-๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฌ, especially on socio-economic left-right positions.
2๏ธโฃOverall, BSW supporters lean ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ (like SPD voters) but are ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ (similar to CDU/CSU voters).
