If releasing the Epstein files would end your presidency, then your presidency must end. It’s that simple.

β€œWe’re here peacefully protesting, looking as ridiculous as we can, just so maybe we appeal to the president because he’s a ridiculous leader that is normalizing abuse of power. And we cannot stand and act like nothing is happening.” πŸ¦„

Again, this is a liquidation of the union in all but letter of the law. This is reverse secessionism engineered by a central government.

Why Protests Should Be Promises Modern movements that aim to advance racial equity should withhold and promise, rather than perform, writes Olúfẹ́mi TÑíwò

we should all go out on October 18 and it's good that so many of us are planning to. but we should all start talking to each other about what we're going to do next, too - what we will withhold together if the abuses continue. we can go on offense, too!

ChatGPT boss predicts when AI could cure cancer

ChatGPT boss predicts when AI could cure cancer

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our β€œtreat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Dissertation ideas for people working in AI Ethics:
- Let’s Not: a thorough exploration of β€œWhat if we didn’t though?”
- This Seems Bad, Guys: providing a critical analysis of The Stuff We Are Doing.
- I Think We’ve Done Enough: why contemporary approaches are probably bad enough already.

I should add, none of this absolves the conquistadors of their guilt. But it might help understand what motivated such rapacious behavior.

It wasn't "interest in the world surrounding them" that separated the Aztecs from the Spanish; it was interest accumulating on debts accrued.

Graeber goes on to point out that efforts by the Spanish crown to stop these atrocities at the time were lackluster because the Spanish, too, were in debt and heavily dependent on the stream of gold and silver to pay those debts.

The conquistadors enslaved the populace and put them to work in silver mines. The natives worked in such desperate conditions that they died by the hundreds of thousands (millions) because the conquistadors who owned and traded them needed to serve interest bearing debts.

Cortes charged his men monopoly prices for their equipment. He charged them for medical services. He created a pyramid of also indebted conquistadors who were motivated by the servicing of their debts to perpetrate atrocities.

Not an expert in this field by any means, but David Graeber's account of this period is compelling. Cortes and the conquistadors were in debt up to their eyeballs and had to keep turning to new frontiers (and subjugating/enslaving their people) to satisfy their creditors.

Drug Rehabs Lure In Patients for Insurance Moneyβ€”Then Leave Them on the Street Operators promise high-end treatment, help addicts sign up for insurance then pile on charges for little in return, say former patients and insurers.

Unbelievable story in the WSJ today. For profit rehab companies trafficking people across state lines to take advantage of publicly subsidized insurance programs. For profit medical care is a mistake, and the downstream effects are incalculable
