I teach Princess Mononoke in my manga and anime class for this very reason (also the Muromachi period is my jam). I have my students debate whether Lady Eboshi is "good" or "bad" and then say, guess what, you're all correct- she's very morally gray and no one's a true villain or hero here!

The thing I find weirdest about this trend is that big-name companies are starting to use it for their TV ads. An ad with some rando talking in the driver's seat of their parked car will come on and it'll be for a big brand waaay too established for this intimate bff chat format.

It has two big eyes toward the top, and the shape of the character makes it look like it has a big round mouth open.

Today's weird little hiragana guy! This is き, pronounced like the word "key." The design is a little rocky or crystalline- did I have the word stone (石 seki/ishi) in mind?
