We live pretty much smack in the geographic middle of Cincinnati so most everything of note is ten to fifteen minutes away. After living in California where the closest family-friendly brewery was 30 minutes away and a date night was at least an hour drive, it’s been a real pleasure

I would love to be that close, but we’re only a 12 minute drive away

Bartender at the beer garden immediately sussed out that my youngest kid was a little down (he wanted to do the splash pad but had no swim gear) and made a Shirley Temple for him. This city is pretty great

Dinner ended up ruined because the chicken we bought was spoiled, so we ended up in downtown Cincinnati at Washington park after some quick eats. Lots of people out enjoying the splash pad and beer garden… ideal summer evening

Well, as in my Philistine example: the modern version of Philistine would be Palestinian. But “Philistine” now means something pretty specific based on common usage, unconnected to Palestine. The way Pharisee gets used is similar, imo

Maybe, but like Philistine it has come to mean something specific beyond its original meaning. I think it’s a bit of a stretch to claim it means something it really isn’t by getting overly literal

Same person. Definitely something to avoid if you are a scruples person. Basically it boils down to married couples should not even be taught NFP because it should be so rarely used, plus mental health issues are caused by people worrying about the wrong things so just stop worrying & you’ll be fine

Paxton’s book is pretty good about that. He’s very reluctant to use the word fascism unless he thinks it’s 100% accurate and thinks the word gets overused to describe authoritarian regimes

(Unlike in many other countries where fascism often came in explicitly Catholic form)

I just recently read Robert Paxton’s Anatomy of Fascism and his take was that in Catholic parts of Germany, worker movements were tied to parish and city life in ways that made it hard for Nazi (or communist) groups to gain much support
