I have written a resource for the Sacramental preparation of young people with additional needs, including those who are nonverbal. It is due to be published soon by β€˜the God Who Speaks’/Archdiocese of Birmingham as a free pdf. Please DM me if you are interested. #autism #inclusion

"...will rejoice in one another's happiness as if it were there own, and consequently the joy and gladness of one will be as great as the joy of all."
- St Thomas Aquinas, from the Office of Readings for today.

"[E]ternal life consists in the joyful companionship of the blessed, a companionship which is full of delight; since each one will possess all good things together with all of the blessed, for they will all love one another as themselves, and, therefore..." [1/2]

Multiple PhDs sounds like a hell unto itself.

This is why I unironically think observational comedy is (can be?) good for the soul.

I think it’s important not to expect yourself or other people to be especially coherent or consistent in either behavior or opinions, but you should expect both to be a little aware of, embarrassed by, & self-deprecating about it.

Religion: NT. Purification of the temple. Christ driving the money-changers from the temple with a whip.
Christ’s expulsion of the money changers who were desecrating the temple in Jerusalem was a favorite theme in Counter-Reformation art. To Catholics, it symbolized purification of the church through internal reforms and the expulsion of Protestant heretics. Known for his uniquely Mannerist style, El Greco used jarring lines, confused space, and illogical lighting in this composition, contributing to the atmosphere of anger and disruption. In 1577 El Greco settled permanently in Spain. A native of Crete, he became known as β€œEl Greco” (the Greek), but here his full signature appears in Greek letters on the step below Christ. In the lower-right corner, El Greco portrayed the four artists he regarded as the giants of the Renaissance: Titian, Michelangelo, Giulio Clovio (a miniaturist and manuscript illuminator), and Raphael.

I would say "after the week of nights we've had, he's welcome to him", but that's just the kind of joke the fae would maliciously comply with.

"Everything is grace" as a wise woman once said, pissing off humourless Thomists everywhere.

Yeah, a weird teenage cocktail of Augustine's Confessions and Lewis' Screwtape Letters left me convinced that, whether or not a literal evil spirit is feeding me those kind of thoughts, the devil would certainly approve of them.

Not that it was a trad parish - but the youth ministry people were very "JPII Catholic"

Good point. The youth ministry at my teen-years Catholic parish was, looking back, very influenced by conservative evangelical media.

Oh yeah, I guess at a certain point that kind of attitude is just a mirror of the prosperity gospel.

Not from a Catholic country, BUT evangelicalism is a lot less influential in the UK and I still see it among Catholics.

Can't wait for someone (Protestant, tradcath, rogue JPII Catholic) to accuse the Vatican of tritheism.

Maybe partly, but there's been enough superstition in the Catholic church through the ages to account for it without blaming them πŸ˜…

18.11.2025 14:23 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I suspect he's just very superstitious. I've met both tradcaths and evangelicals who saw the work of Satan in anything that happened to spook them.

Don't be hasty, demonic intervention might be the only thing keeping it going.

Saw this comment before watching the video and thought it must be a mocking paraphrase, genuinely laughed out loud when I saw it was an exact quote.

"It is terrible that Shabana Mahmood faces overt racism for being a high profile Asian woman" = good argument

"The key to ending overt racism against Asians in Britain is that we must Stop the Boats" = a very bad argument indeed, on so many levels

I love the low-effort categorisation here. "Mysticism may seem like a random assortment of miscellaneous spells, but it divides neatly into Transport, Aborption, and Misc."

I get the impression this was something that genuinely bothered Nolan when making his trilogy, and is why a lot of the hand to hand combat in them just looks a bit rubbish. He wants to make it realistic but knows that means it won't be interestingly choreographed.
