Jesus did not come to teach the teachable; He did not come to improve the improvable; He did not come to reform the reformable. None of those things works. Jesus came to raise the dead.

Remembering the Oxford Martyrs, Thomas Cranmer in particular. The hand that offended, is the same hand that prepared the Great Litany, the first English language rite for the Book of Common Prayer. I invite you to join me, in good Anglican fashion, to pray the Litany on Friday βš“

Keep us, O Lord, constant in faith and zealous in witness, that, like thy servants Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley, and Thomas Cranmer we may live in thy fear, die in thy favor, and rest in thy peace; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord...βš“

Commemoration of Latimer, Ridley, and Cranmer, and 19th anniversary of my ordination to the diaconate in the Cathedral Church of St. James, South Bend (at which service, given my name, we prayed for all the victims of the English Reformation).

A young man stopped me after attending his first AA Meeting here at Messiah, asking if I hear confession. Raised in the Church, he's lived in the far off country squandering all he had. He wanted to turn back to Jesus. As a priest, I am thankful for our Prayer Book liturgy βš“οΈ

"We have turned the holy Scriptures into all languages, and they will scarce allow them to be extant in any tongue. We invite the people to read and hear the word of God; they drive them away from it. We desire the cause in controversy should be understood by all ; but they fly from judgment.

Reveal to us your saving word, O God, that like your servant William Tyndale we might hear its call to repentance and new life. Plant in our hearts that same consuming passion to bring the scriptures to all people in their native tongue, and the strength to endure amidst all obstacles...βš“
